Flying Daleks?

The new series of Dr Who starts on the ABC on Saturday the 21st of May at 7.30pm. Looks good - but what’s with Daleks that can fly?

They flew for awhile before. Chased McCoy up some stairs and all. </anorak>

It’s a great series so far. The casting is excellent.

    No flying daleks (yet?)!?!

I have been ‘following’ the series as it is broadcast in the UK.

The second ep is a cracker. See K-Punk’s musings:

Cool. I have the first five episodes lined up to watch this weekend.

Flying daleks!!?! Oh c’mon. Can’t they make at least some attempt to ground the new series in reality.

I’m with miss p. Crappy 1993-era special effects showed Daleks floating up stairs. Makes sense - how on earth would they invade the Earth if they were going to be defeated by anything other than a flat smooth surface?

“how on earth would they invade the Earth if they were going to be defeated by anything other than a flat smooth surface?”
They just had to wait until 4WDs were common enough. Our government is obviously under the control of the Daleks - why else make the duty do cheap? And why do 4WDers stereotypically drive as if they want to cause the extinction of the human race.
See, it’s all a horrible plot decades in the making!
I’m off to hide in the ironing cupboard covered in as much alfoil as is humanly possible.

harry just hide under the piles of ironing. no one will look there. daleks hate ironing even more than people do. the only thing I hate more than ironing is leaving the ironing on the bench (unironed) and discovering the cat sleeping on it and then having to wash it again, before ironing it. Bloody cat.

Quite right. The TARDIS should clearly adopt the shape of a mobile phone these days…

My in-laws have a classic cartoon of a couple of daleks standing at the foot of of a staircase saying “Buggar, there go our plans for world domination”.

Perhaps Davros finally realised their fatal flaw?

I quite like ironing, myself, Mindy.

I read somewhere that Terry Nation designed the original Daleks from what they really do look like - upturned metal garbage tins with toilet plungers attached. Also that he and his family went on to provide the model for the series ‘The Good Life’ by being agonisingly self-sufficient for a couple of years.

Like Mr Frazer’s cartoon. I mean, it’s so obvious - no feet. Don’t think they had thumbs, either.

True line from the Dalek ep that aired this weekend:

    E-LE-VAAAAAAAATE!!

    *snigger*

    Mark, my ironing pile awaits!

I’m hopeless at ironing skirts & dresses though, Mindy. Not enough practice I guess!

  15. 15 MindyNo Gravatar

Skirts and dresses! Huh. I wear t-shirts and denim shorts to work. I presume you can iron those?

  16. 16 Andrew FrazerNo Gravatar

    T-shirts need to be ironed?

Mark and Mindy this is about Dr Who not ironing if you havent noticed. Or should I say Mork and Mindy? Anyway I’m glad 2 have Dr Who back; I’ve missed it 4 many years and I have no problem with a flying dalek after all 100 years ago few of us could get in an airoplane, its technology init? The Daleks develop their own machiny body like we develop our machines!
