Won't Get Fooled Again…

…a song by The Who, and the first tune played on Brisbane’s rad fm station 4zzz-FM thirty years ago.

But it’ll soon be Bolty’s anthem. Maybe. Anyway, gotta love Ausculture Jess’ work.

It was also supposed to be the closing song on Fahrenheit 9/11. It fits with the “Fool me once, fool me twice” Bushism at the end. But apparently Pete Townshend vetoed it.

I played a gig in the Railway Tavern in Wealdstone NW London where The Who were discovered.

    I wasn’t.

The first song I ever sang in public in the first band I was in was “My Generation.”

Flutey and Nabs, can’t get over what legends you guys are.

First song I ever sang in public was a Leonard Cohen number. At my aunt’s engagement with my similarly drunken cousin.

‘Wont get fooled again’ was the first ever song on Community radio 4ZZZ in Brisbane. Got their licence in the dying hours of the Whitlam Government, just in the nick.

Ahh, I see Mark made that point in the intro. I’ll add “read intro” to the “dont post after fourth chardonnay” rule.

Err, post says that, Lefty E. Unsnort that coke, comrade!

Anyone know anything about the long promised drama series about zzz on sbs? Sposed to be on this year, I think.

In my student pollie days, I was also involved in the anti-Victoria Brazil zzz eviction fight, and went to zzz protests when I was in High School. Must subscribe again to celebrate 30th anniversary!

Nowadays I just nonchantly and innocently hum “A Quick One While He’s Away.”

If you’re interested in a good read on community radio stoushes of the late 1970s, direct yourself to Radio Power by Joan Dugdale (Melbourne, Hyland House, 1979). 3ZZ gets set up, competes in the ethnic broadcasting arena with 3EA, and is shut down by the Fraser Government a couple of years later, with police brutality, occupations, the whole deal.
Incidentally tomorrow marks the thirtieth anniversary of 3EA’s first broadcast—one of the two Ethnic Air stations which was later to become SBS. Await a more in-depth post on this chez moi.

  19. nabs – I don’t know how to say this after one of your recent naively ignorant, but nonetheless, hurtful, comments but the first song I did on stage amped and miked up was “G-L-O……”

Cripes, the frustrated muso/ blog connection. My old band used to cover ‘can’t explain’, with a ripping flute solo. And, in one glorious gig, we covered the Easybeats “Sorry”. Two young ladies decided, despite its inadequacies, that 60s cage-style dancing was in order.

In that moment, I was, ever so fleetingly, Stevie Wright.

Now, Im just an elitist pajero. (Still, beter than remaining Stevie Wright, I guess;….)

  23. ooh flute solo – brings up nightmares of Jethro Tull. Homer Paxton would probably approve.

I got my hands on “Off One’s Tits” by John Birmingham, and coincidently read his article about police brutality at a ZZZ Fairday three days before Sir Joh died and you guys posted about his police state. A frighting story he relates.

Of course guys, if we were leaping around on stage now as we were then, it would be “H-E-R-N-I-A!”
