There seems to be a database issue with comments on some threads - where there’s a disjunction between the reported number of comments on the thread itself and the discussion sidebar - and some people are experiencing odd things when they try to post a comment. All this is under investigation, and hopefully there’ll be a fix in the not too distant future. In the meantime, if you could note exactly what happens when something goes wrong on this thread, it’ll help Rob to get a grip on what’s going wrong.

If a comment goes to moderation, it will show up in the comments count in the sidebar, but not on the post, or in the sidebar list of names. That may explain the disparity in comment counts.
No, it’s not just that, Liam. Sometimes on a long thread the discrepancy can be as much as 20 comments and only perhaps 2 or 3 have been moderated.
sometimes I get a site not found error message then when I go back and hit post again it comes up with a duplicate comment message. If you then hit the back button again and click on another thread usually your comment pops up. I think EP has been having a similiar problem. It’s been happening the past few weeks.
I hit the Submit Comment button, the site looks as if it’s doing its usual thing, but the comment just disappears - no error message, not caught by the moderator, just disappears. It’s only happened on the Beyond Left and right thread. Funny thing is that one comment did get through on thta thread, but four attempts to post something else failed.
If you hit the back button, Rob, and try to post again do you get the duplicate comment message? Something like “you’ve already said that”. This is an issue that only seems to occur on some threads, and intermittently, and as far as I can work out so far, only for IE users.
My comment on Naomi’s Hurricane Katrina post isn’t registering on the comment counter or sidebar either, but if you click on the post it’s there. Don’t want Naomi to think we aren’t reading her posts.
In that case, Mindy, it was because the comment was in moderation owing to your using the name of a big US state which also gave its name to a popular card game much spammed about.
I’m using Firefox, Mark.
Thanks, Rob - I do too and it has never happened to me. EP said he was also using Firefox with a different problem occurring.
Ok, I just posted a comment to the Hurricane Katrina thread, where it is showing up, but it isn’t in the ‘recent comments’ sidebar.
I’m just going to try and post my comment here.
It no workee. Bizarre.
While we’re talking about problems … is anyone else getting a random site when trying to access wsacaucus?
Kate, that one was also in moderation for the same reasons as Mindy’s.
Yeah, I just got it, Amanda.
It says it’s http://www.wsacaucus.org/archives/2005/08/at_last_the_beg.html
but it looks like the domain has expired. Looks like.
Can’t get there through blogroll or bloglines either.
Yes, me too - I think probably the person who’s providing their bandwith has forgotten to reregister the domain name. As happened with techie wizzes - the gravatar kids. I hope the archives have been backed up!
Yeah, just as long as its not me. Thought I might have done something disreputable after my second cappucino for the morning and got myself banned.
there’s a comment in the last saturday salon that “awaits moderation” but it probably belongs in the hurrican katrina thread.
Tyrannosaurus Rex says: Your comment is awaiting moderation.
Please just approve the extended one in the Katrina thread.
T-Rex.
