Stuff the Diva! Good enough for Pharlap!
My money’s on:
Each way bets on: On a Jeune, Strasbourg, Leica Falcon.
Place: Eye Popper.
Trifecta (boxed): all of the above!
Won’t tell you how much money unless I win!

I shall follow your tips, Kimberella!
Find a good SP and keep the immoral TAB out of the loop. Good luck!
Where are the public trust office part time sps of yesterday? Ah, Queensland in the 80s…
We could have had 31-1 on Strasbourg this morning! Grrr…
Sheesh, C.L.! Try and find any bookie in LA to take your bet on some obscure race “down under”!
D’oh! Forgot you were abroad. Second thoughts, maybe it’s best not to seek out a member of the LA branch of this particular fraternity.
I’m sure Kim is too busy meeting studio execs about the screenplay development of Kimberella, Pyrate Queen: The Movie!
I’ve also got Eye Popper. Couldn’t find anything to do with Hayek, though.
Nah - the underdog rule doesn’t work with the nags.
There’s something about a horse like this that makes her the sentimental favourite as well. I really hope she wins, but put my money elsewhere…but as my recent Cup day form isn’t any good, I won’t share…
(I also backed On a Jeune for a place)

unless of course you are getting your beauty sleep and don’t see this comment until after the race.
Strasbourg. Based on my version of “I like the jockey’s colours” (or “I like the colour of his Jockeys”), which is backing the winner of the Saab Quality (ever since I won a packet on Brew). Plus he’s trained by Bart Cummings, which even to a non-racing person like me can’t be bad.
Yes, I’m going with the German connection and Bart Cummings, Tony. 50 bucks each way on Strasbourg. Should be a nice little winner if it comes through!
Mr Celebrity in the office sweep. I’m hoping he finishes.
German connection? Don’t I remember something from high school history about the whole Alsace thing being a bit controversial? Had something to do with the Franco-Prussian War and then the Treaty of Versailles, with WW1 in between, that decided ownership was more likely France (apart from a short disagreement again in the 40’s)? Or is the horse an import?
You’re right, Tony, but it’s still a German-ish connection!
So. How’d you all go?
Had $40 on the second place getter On a Jeune for a place - paying $14.50 so that gives me $580.
Backed Jeune and Leica Falcon $40 each way, and Strasbourg $50 each way.
And those three plus the Diva for a boxed trifecta for $2 (costs $48).
So am up $272.
Pity about the Trifecta - I had the Quinella in there but hadn’t even considered Xcellent (which placed 3rd).
They may as well give Strasbourg back to the bloody Germans… gotta re-examine that “Saab Quality” rule - maybe next year.
The trick is always to spread your money around so that a place from an outsider will recoup it all plus some, Tony - hence I followed most of Kim’s tips and it paid off!
Grrr - trifecta paid $7415 on the Qld Tab. I always get two out of 3 - may have to go for a Quinella in future. Last time I won the Melb. cup trifecta was 94!
Onya, Mark!
The Kimberella is the luckiness!
Thanks for the centrebet suggestion, Mindy, but I took the precaution of opening an online TAB account before I went to the States.
I backed On a Jeune for a grand so I’m up $11000! Woohoo! Might hang around here in California and have a holiday now!
Woohoo indeed!
Watch, out, LA!. Kimberella is cashed up and ready to party!
!!!
She bets a gorilla no less. Kim, you really are my sort of girl.
Cup Day Debarcle
Fruit salad - check
Wine - check
Wine opened and glasses borrowed from cafe up the street - check
Pastry thingys hot - check
Tv on - feck, crap in way of tv from when office flooded
run down to other office - tv, comfy lounges, check
TV reception - feck, more snow than a white Christmas in the Arctic
Spend precious minutes running between office and conference room trying to get a tv with reception. Finally get TV reception, but not a channel that is showing the race. Feck
Back to the other office to see if we can at least get sound on the other tv. Through much snow see what looks like a horse go past the finishing post, with no sound. Wait anxiously for names to come up on screen. Someone else wins the office sweep - check.
Notice that the bank across the walkway has large screen tv showing aftermath of race. Bugger.
Jeebus Kim you’re a brave soul.
That she is, Kate!
Yeah I was thinking of putting a bet on Makybe Diva but I didn’t… mainly because I’ve never put a bet on, ever, and I wasn’t sure how.
Oh well.
It’s not hard, Kate - the Qld TAB had special simplified betting thingies for occasional or new punters. Having said that, you wouldn’t have got much of a return from backing the favourite.
Oh, I know, but at least I would have been right.
There’s that!
Mr Kate has just explained that in some systems you lose money for betting on the favourite. Good thing I didn’t then…
So who won?
Not another bloody horse again I bet.
Heh, bunch of people I know bet on Eye Popper, and it came towards the back. I found this amusing because Im vindictive like that when it comes to silly horse races.
Nice work, Kim. Im suitably jealous.
