Governor-General Goes Green

Pardon the alliteration, but yesterday the Governor-General, Michael Jeffery, put the Federal Government, the Murdoch press and their mates like Martin Ferguson to shame with a timely speech on the dangers of global warming and other environmental problems.

Which just goes to prove that even Howard can make mistakes with important appointments.

JC, if you doubt the science of global warming, you should read the work of climate scientists. Better to read their work than the opinions of people like Mark Steyn (printed in the Oz), who contribute not much to knowledge of global warming except their own opinions.

Is it this or the idea that the GG is making speeches that concerns you?

    Sach

Why would I read the work of Mark Steyn when I can read the work of real fully fledged climate scientists, as you say.
However, when I read their work most are telling me that by 2100 the world will heat up 1.2 to 5.8C. This means 8 degrees in the far northern latitudes and about 3C in the tropics.

This is hardly any cause to be alarmed, is it?

    Actually, it is, Joe.

But rather than reinvent the wheel, I’ll refer people to this post and longest ever comments thread at Quiggin on global warming.

JC: here is a blog organised by climate scientists…

    http://www.realclimate.org/

and on it is a page talking about the a tendency for an increase in intensity of hurricanes under global warming:

    …just a few things.

Please don’t go round sprouting Katrina was a cat 5.
The official estimate was that Bush/ Chensy managed to reduce it to cat 3 when it hit.

So according to you ,Sach, lets not get out of bed in the morning as it is too risky.

I thought the JQ thread proved 2 things; that the end of the (global warming) debate did not happen and that there’s no longer any serious debate (about global warming).

JC should see Soyent Green with Charlton Heston, made in 1973, which is set in the future in a world burning up with the “Greenhouse Effect”. It is interesting to think how long scientific understanding and popular awareness of climate change has been around, under the cover of the Cold War.

A social history of the global warming issue would be very interesting, with lots of connections to the changing politics and technologies of the last fifty years - satellites, computing, etc. There are some very specific reasons why climate change has become the issue it is.

Is there nothing these men can’t do?

They’re pretty impressive. I didn’t realise that the faith-based reality was that powerful. Neo-con over mind!

Could you ask Zoot if they’re Oakley’s he’s wearing. He won’t answer me it seems.

Zoot - what’s your preferred brand of sunnies? Commenters everywhere are curious!

“The official estimate was that Bush/ Chensy managed to reduce it to cat 3 when it hit.”

How did they manage this when they haven’t been able to manage to restore order in Iraq? Or do you mean the PR campaign, al la Saddam was the 9/11 mastermind and Iraq had heaps of WMDs and stuff for building the Bomb?

I don’t go around spruiking anything except that people who actually work in the field and know something meaningful about it should, in the first instance, be listened to.

Eg, if you wanted to talk about decompositions of tensor products of certain finite-dimensional representations of certain quantum superalgebras at roots of unity, then I’m your man - as I comprise possibly 20% of the total population that knows something about this (I wrote about it in my PhD thesis).
