Memento homo quia pulvis es et in pulverem reverteris

It’s Ash Wednesday. Anyone planning to give anything up? Now that Carnival, or Mardi Gras (which as far as I can tell, passed unnoticed in the Australian blogosphere) is past us.

I wonder how many people realise that ‘Mardi Gras’ is part of the liturgical season of Lent.

Mark, the Sydney Gay and Lesbian Mardi Gras has been in full swing for the last 3 weeks and culminates with the annual parade and party this Saturday. Presumably you’re talking about Shrove Tuesday passing without comment?

I’m giving up working for the man to perpetuate the oppressive system of capitalism.

Actually I’m quite ready to give up being an under-employed freelancer.

Geoff, as Ron’s link points out, Shrove Tuesday and Mardi Gras (liturgical not Gay and Lesbian) are the same thing.

The Latin is the first of these biblical verses used by the Priest for the imposition of ashes:

    The priest or minister says

“Remember, man, that you are dust, and unto dust you shall return.”

    or

“Turn away from sin and be faithful to the Gospel.”

I love being an under-employed freelancer, Kate — but I might have to give up blogging, just so I can get any work done at all.

“liturgical not Gay and Lesbian) ”

Some might see the G&L Mardi Gras as akin to religious rites, Mark :)

I had been checking the New Orleans websites trying to keep up with stuff and see what was going on in health and housing and jobs. and music.

I saw a few articles about how the possies and Indians were coping and I saw a bit on TV the other night about the Mardi Gras parade. So I knew what was goin on in NO and the catholic scene.

That other thing in sydney. shrug.

PC, I quite enjoyed it last year but now the work has dried up a bit for me so I need a real job. Plus we want to buy a house and banks are leery of people like me.

I know Geoff! I was being a bit ironic - is there an emoticon for that?

Lent has been abolished as a security measure.

Security authorities are taking seriously the threat made in Latin, above. A group of twelve men of Middle Eastern appearance, together with another recent convert, thought to be connected with this threat are being kept under surveillance. In view of the ominous references to an unspecified “powder” in this foreign language threat, arrests are expected soon. It is known that these men have visited Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Turkey, Greece, Malta and Italy; Intelligence reports that one of the group, with the code-name “Tom”, had gone to Kerela in southern India are being investigated. ……… So guess who is NOT giving up wedge politics and the misuse of intelligence resources for Lent.
