BrisScience plug - guest post by Michael Bremner

Frequent LP commenter Mick writes:

Mark has been kind enough to let me give a plug to a new Brisbane-based monthly lecture series. BrisScience is an initiative which aims to make cutting-edge scientific research to the general public. Each BrisScience lecture will be given by speakers who are both leaders in their field and renowned for their public speaking ability.

The first speaker in the series is Professor John Mattick, who co-founded the University of Queensland’s Institute for Molecular Bioscience. I’ve been fortunate enough to see him speak on a number of occasions. He really is an inspiring speaker who is able to give simple, concise explanations of sometimes difficult concepts. His talk will be about some of his research that challenges part of the central dogma of modern genetics. (So you better go and see the talk before the enforcers for the Bully Boy Advocates of the Intellectual Status Quo get to him :-))

The series begins next Monday night (13th of March) commencing at 6:30 PM. Every lecture is free and will be held in the Judith Wright Centre for Contemporary Arts in Fortitude Valley. Each lecture should go for about an hour and will be followed by free drinks and nibblies. Check out the BrisScience website for more info.

So, why not head into the Valley next Monday nght to kick off on the usual BrisVegas hospitality night shenanigans?

It would be more fun if rather then a patronizing lecture from one ‘expert’, BrisScience organized a WSS style debate between Mattick and someone less in bed with Monsanto’s plans to slap a patent on everything nature provided for free.

I can’t say that I know too much about the issues, Bruce, but I don’t know that you can assume that it will be a patronising lecture. It does appear as if the possibility for engagement is there, and anything that fosters public debate is always worthy.

Looks interesting, but a bit far to travel from Taswegia. A transcript would be nice.

    Bruce :

someone less in bed with Monsanto’s plans to slap a patent on everything nature provided for free.

any references for this - did a bit of Googling but could find no links ? Links I did find tended to demonstrate the opposite, such as this interview

    “4 Corners Interview”
