Naked Feminist Knitting Circle VI (by popular request)

By popular request, I decree that it’s once again time for that fine occasional feature - the absolutely lighthearted no stoushing allowed post.

    Fantastic service at this joint.

    We aim to please, Zoe!

Regardless of what anyone thinks of Aeon Flux the Movie, one thing surely everyone can agree on is the fabulosity of the way Charlize moves (and looks) - check out some of the clips on the official website under Dowloads - Media. You might like to start with “Magnifying Eye”.

Well, I don’t know how to knit or anything… can I just stand around at the side of the room and,y’know, watch?

(btw, was the Aeon Flux movie any good?)

Yes, looking a fair bit spiffier than in some of her more recent roles.

Let me count the ways, Zoe!

Not bad, j_p_z, in some moments it captured the ethos of the series, but it was too heavily narrativised. In its own terms, not a bad action film. And looks absolutely wonderful as you can see from the photos and the clips on the site.

I like this bit of a review:

With mainstream animated features bending over backwards to appear more lifelike, it’s a bracing joy to get to see a live action movie as utterly cartoonish as Aeon Flux — which, incidentally, concerns a slinky futuristic heroine who cannot only bend over backwards, but also dodge poison darts, scale amphitheatre walls, vault over cherry blossom trees and analyze water molecules at a glance.

    That’s my gal!

Of course, the point worth making is it’s best not to make too many comparisons with the series. I enjoyed the movie (and Charlize) but this comment from Eileen Lau on imdb.com goes to the heart of the deradicalisation that was probably always going to happen with translation into blockbuster:

    In the animated series:

Aeon Flux was an amoral rebel that was completely detached from everything and everyone. She was cruel, selfish, loving, unpredictable, witty, caustic, confident, sarcastic, lethal, untamable, ambiguous all at once. The original Aeon had layers upon layers of depth. She almost never allowed her personal emotions to show through. The original plot was deliciously ambiguous and thought provoking. You could never tell what Aeon’s motives were. Aeon was a militant anarchist whereas Trevor was a radical idealist, because of this they could never have any semblance of a stable relationship.

    In the movie:

Aeon Flux works for the Monicans and her political motives and personal motives are very clear. She was pretty, loving, vulnerable, easily tamable, emotional and very predictable. The Aeon in the movie had one layer of depth at most. The plot was obvious and contrived. Everything is completely laid out for you from the beginning. There was virtually no conflict between Aeon and Trevor, at least in terms of personal philosophies. The only conflict between them was that they were on different sides.

Is this like some Madame Defarge chopping heads off thing? I could get into that.

Maybe, but only in the nicest possible of ways :)
