Yeah, look, I think we’re going to get done. But I always think that. They always look bigger, faster and better organised. Yet last time for 69 minutes and one second they didn’t score a thing.

‘Mate against mate, state against state’ is an absolutely brilliant slogan, for whatever sort of game it’s promoting. That’s the best slogan for something I’ve heard in ages. Did someone get a trophy for it?

Whatever the sport is, I sure hope it lives up to the phrase…

You ought to hear Tina Turner sing it on top of the Sydney Harbour Bridge, JPZ. With two teams of players covered in blood running up and down the ladders trying to punch, then hug, each other, while smoking Winfield cigarettes and yelling ‘At Lowes!’.

  4. 4 RoosterNo Gravatar

…then cue in Tom Keneally in a bucket hat reciting that poem which finishes with “blow that whistle, ref”.

  5. 5 RoosterNo Gravatar

I’ve wagered some cash for Willie Mason to be first tryscorer.

Commenters tip: Queensland to win. Look at their backline and forget all this whinging in the forwards.

  7. 7 steve munnNo Gravatar

Maaaate, you are all worshipping a false idol.

Come over to the Church of AFL, confess your sins and your souls will be saved.

  8. 8 LukeNo Gravatar

    Hmmmm….wait, hang on….its that….can I hear it in the distance….

    ….nope, I couldn’t give a toss.

  9. 9 KatzNo Gravatar

    So let’s see.

In Queensland you watch Rugby League and eat roast mutton roll and cold boiled veges.

And what time is “Blue Hills” on the wireless?

  10. 10 wpdNo Gravatar

Queensland to win. The Ref’s future depends on it.

  11. 11 andyNo Gravatar

Is there a Rugby League game on tonight?

I’d rather watch a bunch of fat, slow old ex-AFL players having a bit of fun. In fact, I probably will.

  12. 12 MONo Gravatar

Thank you, State of Origin concept. Especially the rules.

    Rabbitohs 34 Broncos 14

    We’re on our way!

Watch for a Queensland win. This game is in a little (not yet a lot) of trouble. Game 1 wasn’t sold out. Dunno about tonight but if us cockroaches win – again – tonight, I can see SOO heading down the same slippery slope to oblivion as it’s inventor’s, the AFL, version.

Souths and Manly are now privately owned. Easts (AKA the Roosters) are too. It’s fans just don’t realise it. Soon a lot more will be going down that track, although I don’t count Rupert’s plastic teams as being privately owned. More like loss making branches. Yes, Melbourne Storm. It’s YOU I’m talking about.

Down the track, Mad Max Delmege, Nick Politis and Peter Holmes’A'Crowe aren’t going to take kindly to their stars being unavailable for four weeks a season and returning to the club scene as damaged goods.

It looks like RL is on its last legs anyway. The World Cup has shown that up. See:http://weekbyweek7.blogspot.com/

But also RL has a terrible recent track record. See http://weekbyweek7.blogspot.com/2006/05/rugby-league-news-gets-worse-and-worse.html

A mate and I have a running bet – my homebrew vs his $3.50 Lambrusco. It’s a running bet – been going 6 years now – because neither of us want to collect (although I assure him my homebrew is maturing nicely).

  15. 15 MuskiempNo Gravatar

I remember the 70’s when because of Rugby League, the Rugby Union was on it’s last legs. Ha wrong again.
Both Rugby codes and football (soccer)have at least one thing over AFL.
You can play for your country in a real competitive game, playing the same game.
Also with both Rugby Codes, we have those NSW vis QLD games, forever to be treasured.
    Qld to win tonight.
Ha! to that woeful game AFL

  16. 16 Brian BahnischNo Gravatar

Well my missus says she never thought she’d say it but she’d rather watch RL than ALF, Rugby Union or soccer. At least you can see what’s happening, follow the rules more or less and most of the time there is something happening. Not standing around waiting for line-outs or wrestling in a heap.

When we beat Greece at soccer and it came on the news, she said “You mean they ran around all night for that!” meaning the goal. Whereupon she looked down at her plate and missed the replay.

It seems that AFL track record is not much better than league.
    http://stoush.net/jason/320/when-will-the-bias-end

NSW by 20. Forwards to dominate again.

  18. 18 David HeidelbergNo Gravatar

As a Raiders fanatic, I’m going for Adam Mogg.

  19. 19 Tyro RexNo Gravatar

QLD are nothing but one hit wonders. See youse in Melbourne.

  20. 20 Tyro RexNo Gravatar

Week by Week, the reason there is so much controversy around league is that the AFL does its best to ignore off field behaviour (and half the on field behaviour) of its players and washes its hands of it.

When was the last time the AFL ever de-registered a player?

See this for a long litany of ignored scandals:

  21. 21 wpdNo Gravatar

QLD will win. And despite my earlier comment, the Ref’s decisions have been relatively irrelevant.

Lockeyer has been great. And the front rower, PC, (I can’t spell his name) has been magnificent!

  22. 22 Michael GNo Gravatar

David, what chance Adam Mogg beats both NSW and Qld?

  23. 23 wpdNo Gravatar

Nothing to do with this thread necessarily, but why can’t contributors use adverbs; and draw a distinction between its and it’s.

This decline in standards started in the 12th century and there has been no improvement.

  24. 24 ShaunNo Gravatar

Well, NSW by 20 points was a little out.

Full credit to QLD as the played all over NSW especially in the forwards.

Relive the game via live blogging of the game at Troppo

    To Melbourne!

  25. 25 Brian BahnischNo Gravatar

In case anyone doesn’t yet know Qld won by 30-6. It was a great shame we let them get one back in the 77th minute. Before that we had 137 mins of footy while we scored 8 tries to their nil.

We beat them all over the park. They didn’t look like they had a show apart from a minute of two. 17 heroes, but Lockyer first amongst equals.

I’ve noticed those big guys in the blue jumpers can’t run too well when they’re on the ground.

I checked the atendances at Sydney NRL games last weekend. 6,000, 7,000, 9,000 etc.. What a bunch of fuckin’ pussies- a little bit of winter rain and you darlings don’t dare step outside.

Why is it that the biggest footy crowds in Brisvegas and Sydney are for the Brisbane Lions and Sydney Swans respectively? The sooner the rugby codes (which are cultural cringe inspiring embarrassments) are euthanased the better.

  27. 27 ShaunNo Gravatar

Given only one AFL team in Sydney not wonder the Swans get the crowd as does Brisvegas. NRL games in Brisvegas are usually well attended. As for Sydney, I blame the refs. Don’t argue. We all do it.

  28. 28 CommenterNo Gravatar

They are not the biggest sporting teams in Sydney and Brisbane. They are gathering spots for Victorian immigrants. There are alot of them up here who have escaped their foul beginnings.

  29. 29 john ryanNo Gravatar

Truer words were never said, take the expats out of AFL in SYD, BRIS and you would have 3 men and a dog,and i,m not sure about the dog.
Anyway great win QLD give it to em good just hope they repeat the dose in Melb

David heidelberg well done.Adam Mogg was indeed a big winner from this game.It is great to see a player that tries week in week out for a side that doesn’t rate headlines do so well.He is representative of a club which although lacking in big names makes it up in the “guts” they show on the field.

Perhaps now selectors will be receptive to the possibility of picking Raiders Players for future games. Alan Tongue and Troy Thompson are two players that have a good chance of making the NSW team for game 3 in my opinion.

  32. 32 RoosterNo Gravatar

I think that’s the first time I’ve seen Adam Mogg (or any Raiders player) play on a free-to-air match in a long time… I’m tired of watching Parra games week in, week out.

And what’s all this playa-hatin’ against League and Union? There’s more than enough love to share* amongst all our football codes!

*Granted, I enjoy Club Rugby more than I do Test Rugby. Saturday afternoons aren’t the same without watching the Penrith Emus taking on Randwick.

I’m tired of watching Parra games week in, week out.

Me too though I suspect for different reasons.

  34. 34 Brian BahnischNo Gravatar

Mogg was a revelation and I hope the selectors keep him even when Inglis comes back. I’m in favour of playing wingers on the wing, especially for defense.

  35. 35 Bernice BalconeyNo Gravatar

I’m in favour of anyone in a Blues jumper who can hang onto the ball.

  36. 36 Brian BahnischNo Gravatar

BB they can only do that if we let them, and vice versa of course.

I know NSW looked bad, but for once I agreed with everything Phil Gould said. He stressed that it wasn’t NSW playing bad, it was us playing well that determined how things went. May that state of affairs continue forever!

  37. 37 TrentonNo Gravatar

Brian said:”I know NSW looked bad, but for once I agreed with everything Phil Gould said. He stressed that it wasn’t NSW playing bad, it was us playing well that determined how things went. May that state of affairs continue forever!”
Exactly right NSW were never allowed to get into the game. The good news is now they know how to do it there is no reason why they can’t do it again Johns or no Johns.QLD is a young side on the up.I still can’t believe that some of the so called better judges thought that QLD went that bad in game1.It could be argued that the amount of mistakes they made in the first half of game1 that NSW should have won by plenty.Instead they “limped” home to win but people like Gould and Warren Ryan insisted that they had handed QLD a pasting.QLD always had more scope for improvement in them considering the debutantes in game1 and I found it surprising that some good judges(Warren Ryan) had deluded themselves into thinking that a one point victory represented a big win.

  38. 38 Brian BahnischNo Gravatar

I think that’s right Trenton. The stats showed a high error and non-completion count for NSW for game 1. Warren Bolland even gave the explanation that they dropped the pill in game 1 through the exuberance of running around with no decent opposition!
