    Cool!

Catchy girl-punk and the most copyright-violating videoclip I’ve seen in a long time (you’re not going to try to tell me they got permission for all of that?). Love it on both levels…

    Cool song and vid indeed.

Going off on a tangent. Robert do you know if this is a fan made video? (I’m assuming it is given Bikini Kill are no more and X-Men 3 footage is used). There is some ridiculous shenanigans between the RIAA and YouTube users making their own vids.

Needs a few shots of Callisto

I’m 99.99% sure it is a fan-made clip. I doubt Bikini Kill will care, and the clips of everyone else are so short I doubt any of the owners will bother. But I’m probably wrong, given the pig-headedness of the copyright industry.

Oh, and I’ve added a bonus video which is just too funny.

I’ve often wondered about this idea; that portraying women as violent and dangerous is somehow empowering. It strikes me that a lot of this patriarchal world’s problems are caused by men being violent and dangerous, and that this strand of feminism sees women as having to compete on these term – men’s terms.

I’ve always liked the way Pedro Almodóvar portrays the unsung qualities that women often bring to society; selflessness, generousity, and caring. I find this more inspiring than some latex-attired bombshell kicking ass.

    Chuckle, chuckle.

    Lil’ darlin’s with penis envy.

    Bless their little parts.

I think the point, cnwb, is that it’s fiction, just like Batman and Superman are fiction.

Sorry, Jason, if my previous comment was insensitive ; )

  10. 10 cnwbNo Gravatar

Anna, I’m not sure I understand your point. Are you suggesting that we shouldn’t read too much into fiction?

Is this the random video thread? I have a random video. Here’s my random video. It’s very good, or, I like it, anyway.

  12. 12 RobertNo Gravatar

Yeah, I think this can be a random video thread. Good idea, Amazing Kim! Every Sunday, random videos.

  13. 13 RobertNo Gravatar

Plus, that was a really cool video!

One of the first fan based vids I remember. I’m not a fan of Rammstein but this video using the anime Neo Genesis Evangalion is pretty cool.

My point is that it’s fun to watch action heroes – and it’s nice to see women do it too. It’s not like men can actually be Superman, so it’s silly to suggest that women shouldn’t be Buffy.

Most of the women being celebrated in the video are heroes who save people, they’re not just randomly “violent and dangerous”. They’re empowering because they can save themselves, and other people. And that is a good message for young girls.

Thanks Anna. I actually had a second part to my comment which I deleted for brevity; a kind of disclaimer in which I admitted that I also agreed with the counterarguments to my initial statement, and which you’ve articulated so well. I’m the classic fence-sitter.

  17. 17 RobertNo Gravatar

I also don’t like the idea that if women take on “male” traits there is something wrong with them. Especially since there’s nothing to stop these hero(in)es from being caring, selfless and generous, too — isn’t Superman?

  18. 18 KimNo Gravatar

I’m with Anna and Robert, and it’s also the case that worries that women are portrayed as “aggressive” run a very strong risk of forcing us back into a passive posture.

“…that women are portrayed as “aggressiveâ€? run a very strong risk of forcing us back into a passive posture”

I had this reservation in mind when I posted my initial comment.

Please be aware that when I said “I’ve often wondered about this idea…”, that I was implying that it was an idea in incubation, and not my steadfast opinion. I’m not at all trying to promote the notion that women should be portrayed as fragile, delicate, passivie objects, or that they should be excluded from proactive character roles. I was simply trying to highlight another angle on the phenomenon that has been lurking in my internal Socratic dialogue.

You really do have to love Anya in the bunny suit!

  22. 22 ShaunNo Gravatar

It was an interesting way for Anya to deal with her leporiphobia.

I love the Colbert video – it’s amazing how many people who talk about the supreme moral importance of the Ten Commandments can’t rattle them off.

I also wonder how many of them realise that breaking the 7th commandment is variously adultery/murder/killing/stealing/kidnapping depending upon which Jewish or Christian sect one belongs to – there is no single agreed-upon Judeo-Christian version of the Ten Commandments.

  24. 24 KimNo Gravatar

There’s also two sets of commandments in the Pentateuch. Just sayin…

  25. 25 ShaunNo Gravatar

If someone in the US was to actually try and make the 10 commandments law, at least half would violate the constitution.

  26. 26 tigtogNo Gravatar

Even better Kim, there’s three sets – Deuteronomy Chapter 5, Exodus Chapter 20 and Exodus Chapter 34. The versions most quoted are based on either Deut 5 or Exo 20 which are fairly similiar, but Exo 34 is the only one where God’s words on the tablets are referred to directly as “The Ten Commandments”. I’ve got no idea how that was meant to be counted however, and as those verses in Exo 34 are, after the obligatory “I’m the Lord your only God” bits, all about observing festivals, sacrificing and redeeming of firstborns, and kosher food rules, they’re nothing like what most people think of as the 10C.

    * * *
As the Constitution was framed by men very aware and wary of the blood shed during the European wars of religion, they wrote that document very carefully to ensure as best they could that the government could avoid falling into religious partisanry. They would absolutely loathe what’s happening these days, Shaun.

  27. 27 KimNo Gravatar

Thanks, tigtog, I’ll go have a read!

Are Bikini Kill still around? I remember seeing them play ‘95 or so and then they seemed to drop off the radar.

  29. 29 CristyNo Gravatar

Robert, thank you for putting that up. It is a classic.

  30. 30 ShaunNo Gravatar

They are long gone mick but I do love that song.

  31. 31 cnwbNo Gravatar

Kathleen Hanna now plays in Le Tigre.

  32. 32 MarkNo Gravatar

Le Tigre are a great band!

  33. 33 mickNo Gravatar

I’ve not heard Le Tigre play. Time to do some digging me thinks.
