The forgotten war in pictures

I was at the Brisbane Powerhouse last night to see the Toby Wren Trio launch its latest cd. Incidentally, brilliant stuff and any connoisseurs of jazz guitar should check the website for info on upcoming gigs and the album, Umlaut.

But I wanted to post about something else I had a quick look at last night. As part of the Brisbane Festival, there’s a photo exhibition on at the Powerhouse until 6 August:

DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF CONGO: FORGOTTEN WAR

Presented by Brisbane Powerhouse in association with MSF Australia and Brisbane Festival.

A powerful exhibition by world-renowned VII Photo Agency photographers Ron Haviv, Gary Knight, James Nachtwey, Antonin Kratochvil and Joachim Ladefoged revealing the suffering of the Congolese people as they struggle to survive a war that has remained virtually invisible to the outside world.

In 2005, VII travelled with Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) to document the crises of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), formerly known as Zaire, where conflict has produced the highest death toll since the Second World War.

The exhibition will be accompanied by film screenings, forums and music performances from the DRC.

I’ll be going back to have more of a look but it also gives me the chance to remind people that MSF is one of the only NGOs working in the DRC, and they always can do with donations.

I’ve been down to have a look. It’s a very moving exhibition.

I guess that’s one exhibition where you really don’t feel like alerting others to its existence on your mobile.

Anyway, what 4 million dead so far? Hey, it’s Africa right? Heart of Darkness.
