Why I want Australia to have faster broadband

Because I’m a sucker for a cheeky marketing campaign, and I want to check out the Showtime series Weeds. And to do so I want better bit torrent speeds. Grrr.

This new series is a single-camera comedy about a single mother who makes ends meet by selling marijuana in the fictional suburb of Agrestic, California. The series exposes the dirty little secrets that lie behind the pristine lawns and shiny closed doors of homes in the of this gated community. Mary Louise Parker stars as the suburban mom who resorts to selling weed to support her family after her husband unexpectedly dies.

Mary-Louise Parker! We’re being denied Mary-Louise Parker!

I don’t recall the whole first season taking me that long to download. Set it up overnight, go to bed, and there you go. Anyway, its very good. First season ended on a bit of a cliffhanger, S2 starts this week or next.

Ah… first lesbians on tv, now drugs. It’s a slippery slope, Kim.

Which reminds me, what is up with Showtime not letting people from outside the US access their webpages? The only webiste I know that does it.

We at Showtime Online express our apologies; however, these pages are intended for access only from within the United States.

    What is up with that?

    Also, Elizabeth Perkins is faaaabulous.

Yeah it’s well worth checking out. Lots of drama and lots of laughs: what more could you want?

Must check it out, it sounds good.
The English movie’Saving Grace’ was about that aswell, very cute.
That Showtime thing is very odd. I found that when looking up Penn & Teller’s BS.

Cool, thanks, folks. Just wanted to get a sense if it was worth a 6 hour download!

Heads and shoulders, knees and toes, let’s all download to-geth-er. I heart Bittorrent.

I quite like Weeds. I’m sad to say, however, that this is the kiss of death for cable shows. I plan to stop watching it and vociferously proclaim my hatred of it so that I don’t deprive the rest of the world of a fine show.

    We appreciate the sacrifice, Matilda.

Did some investigation round at my friend’s place this arvo. Apparently it’s not too easy to download individual eps of series 1 at the moment because everyone is hunting down series 2. The whole of series 1 is available – as a 2.2 gig download. But here’s where broadband speed comes in – Telstra’s habit of downgrading you to 64k dialup speeds could be nasty if you’re near your limit (I’m told it’s more like 4 gig because of the uploads as well) and the show turns out not to be to your taste.

Haven’t seen “Weeds” yet, but I hear it’s good. (Plus, M.L. Parker! Yum!)

But if you’re having trouble seeing it, you might tide yourself over for the moment by having a look into the plays of Justin Tanner, a funny and prolific playwright with a cult following in Los Angeles. His play “Pot Mom” from many years ago, explores similar themes. (although, no M.L. Parker.)

He also wrote the hysterical “Zombie Attack!” which has one of the best plot developments I’ve seen:

Act I — self-absorbed post-collegiate yuppie types meet in country house for soul-searching weekend about the loss of their idealistic youth.

Act II — they are all eaten by zombies.

Some enterprising Oz theatre company should think about doing a Tanner festival… they’re weirdly fun, and make for a good party atmosphere, which used to be an important (and now, kind of lately lamented) component of theatre circles I used ta know…

p.s. — just recently saw the photos of the (apparently annual?) Sydney Zombie Stagger, which I didn’t even know existed! Fantastic! Your whole nation must be enthusiastically congratulated and saluted, for coming up with such a great idea…

Similar themes? Similar themes? No M.L. Parker?

    M.L. Parker themes, please!

Does Telstra have off peak hours where data downloaded doesn’t count towards your monthly allotment?

I’m with (Exetel) and between 2:00am and 10:00am is free. So I throttle my torrents outside those hours and then go crazy then. You can script the downloading as well (ie your client automatically starts up at 2:00am and then stops at 10:00am). Helps me keep on the right side of my usage.

Okay, call me a luddite – I have known about Weeds since it first came out in the US, but thought I would never see it. Have heard about Bittorent, know what it is, but never investigated. But THIS POST has pushed me in the right direction. It is all your fault LP.
ps: I want to be MLP when I grow up. I know my DH would approve too. Esp. if I was MLP as she was on ‘The West Wing’.
    Enough rambling.

Wiki is your friend Megami. So is Azureus and Spytorrent.

Don’t get us started on Amy in the West Wing, Megami, or this thread might be able to look forward to a very long future. I want to marry her.

  17. 17 MarkNo Gravatar

Shaun, not sure, but I’ll investigate. Anyway, what you can always do with Telstra is save your big downloads til the end of the month as they slow the speeds down til the end of the calendar month when you go over the limit.

    Thanks for the tips, Shaun.

I somehow used up my iinet broadband 20,000MB peak (have another 20,000MB off peak it was a pretty good deal at the time but I could get a better one now and will do so in a year when I “come off contract”, NRL player like) last month and was shaped to 64kb for a few weeks. It was hideous, LP in particular was virtually unloadable alot of the time.

  20. 20 MarkNo Gravatar

Yes, you really want to avoid those downgrades to 64k. It seems infinitely worse than the actual old 56k dialup modem I had. I’m sure the effective speed is much lower than claimed.

  21. 21 AmandaNo Gravatar

I think I read somewhere where watching a few YouTube videos really eats it up without you realising.

  22. 22 MarkNo Gravatar

    Sadly true.

    Mark, how could you!
