Pavlov's Cat: "...Would one rather be called a Mender or a Breaker in life, that is the question."

A fair insight, and a fine one, so far as it goes; but do let us be wary of presumption. What we'd like to be 'called,' and what we actually 'do,' can diverge in the most un-thought-of ways.

How can we know for sure what it is we really 'do'? Often enough, those who seek to mend one thing are also busily breaking another, unseen thing, which they don't or can't know about; and the folks busy breaking things are sometimes mending stuff they aren't aware of, too. Let's just do our work, honestly and with good intentions, and let the world make its zany uses of it.

For instance, look at this fellow Mr. Fairless, writing down his quirky little musings, to who knows what end. (And which to my ear have just the faintest soupcon of the ending of 'The Legend of Saint Julian, Hospitaller' -- but let that be.) His book passed into obscurity long before any of us reading this site were born. Goodness knows who read it way back then; what impression it made on those readers; and what influence some of those readers might have had on the older people in our own lives. And now here it is again, courtesy of Monsieur Gummo, summoned back into currency on the internet, of all the krazy futuristic media. Makes the head spin a tiny bit.

"My life belongs to the world. I will do what I can."

I would have thought, re road-mender and stone-breaker, that 'one is more pregnant than the other' (a phrase that proves one can, after all, be a little bit pregnant) isn't taking the difference far enough. Would one rather be called a Mender or a Breaker in life, that is the question.

'A shitload of purple prose' has to be a hot contender for Phrase of the Week.
