I’m flying to Melbourne tonight and will be there til Monday afternoon. Unfortunately, since it’s the first week of semester I’ve been very busy, and haven’t had time to organise a grogbloggy thing. But I’m free at 7.30pm on Sunday night if anyone would like to catch up for a drink. I was going to suggest the Fad Bar, but apparently it’s closed on Sundays. Please leave suggestions for venues here – I’m staying in Swanston St, so the city or close nearby would be good for me. I’ll have my laptop with me, so I’ll update the post with the preferred venue.
Update: Venue as suggested by Lefty E in the first comment on the thread.

I’m in for Sunday Mark – see you then.
One venue suggestion might be Cookie – on Swanston St, appropriately located in John Curtin house, upstairs, 252 Swanston St.
Its open Sundays – and probably less packed than it is Fri/Sat.
I though it was agreed that the next Melb GB’d be chez LE. For historical reasons.
Or if it’s a balmy evening, Madame Brussell’s roof top.
And in the same vein there’s the old Carlton Hotel on Bourke that’s recently been redone in a style best described as eccentric Edwardian bordello.
And what a tragedy that is, Nabs.
Time was, you could rely on the place to have an open bottle shop at street level until about 3am, and get pub-price drinks until 4 or 5, complete with seedy-looking dealers and hookers, pool tables with 10-year-old felt and 15-year-old jukebox tunes – 3 songs for a buck!
Cookie is a great idea, tasty & plentiful food too. And it’s a damned charming place where not groaning with punters.
Im easy – Cookie, or Nabs’ Bordello-on-Bourke.
As Wbb alludes, my track record hardly gives me standing on venue calls. However, Operation Restore Credibility commences with my shout.

yep them were the days FDP. i remember when men were men and not girlie boys.lads had fight..beat the shit out of each udder and kiss n make up in morning. Things are goin to pac with a broomstick and you dont have to be interlctjual to realise it.
Yeah, Cookie is good for me as long as it’s not filled to the rafters. There’s also the Gin Palace if people are into cocktails, or maybe Manchuria…
I might be around for Sunday evenng.
If we’re going to keep throwing out names there’s also the Order of Melbourne for a good rooftop (and stairs, and a we’re so cool we don’t have to put a sign out the front ambience).
People are not into cocktails, Merkel.
Cookie sounds good. Falls down stairs. Bounces off pavement…
wbb: Cookie serves enough wacky Belgian beer that they almost count as cocktails
Mmm… Belgian beer.
Ok, let’s make it Cookie!
You can’t miss it Mark. John Curtin House, between Club X, the board games shop, Collectors Corner and Asian travel agents, right across the street from Lounge, the combination bong shop and piercing parlour and a sushi chop shop. Commercial sex, foreign food, dice and figurines, rare music, drug paraphenalia and cheap travel. I’m sure John Curtin would get his head around all that eventually.
Joe2:
Clearly, you don’t know what I was talking about. But still, feel free to wade in!
It was the shittest pub in history, but it was still good to know it was there. Now it’s gone, and just another inner city bar.
Boring.
will try to make it too.
the evening does hold magic, cause CALEXICO are playing the second of a two night stand at Corner Hotel.
Last night’s show was sparkling, and I’m makin’ it a double.
FDB says “Clearly, you don’t know what I was talking about. But still, feel free to wade in!”
Correct on first count and true I did wade in. Just mucking around generally about lamentations. Something I do a lot.. often concerning old watering holes, now poxed up and souless.
Cheers and hope grogblog was a corker.
Furst!
And if you Lefty E care to email me at:
wilberforcepike@hotmail.com
then why yes you will be then on the mailing list for that.
Tooth!
I certainly will Nabs, and thanks for the temperant evening.
Nice grogblog, cheers all.
Yes, the Sunday night meeting of Nabs’ temperance society was a good night indeed!
