Right back atcha, Your Maj.
OT - I have upgraded to a new version of Firefox and now LP is completely screwed in my browser. Can’t see the banner pic or the sidebar. The font is weird, too. Woe is me.
It’s all the bloody feminists’ fault, Rob.
No, fuckit, this ONE DAY of year is an utter farce. When pray tell, is International Men’s Day? (that’s a rhetorical question btw, that we ALL know the answer to).
There was a time when we needed some recognition– Helloo We’re here too. But I think its past and we need to move on, we did get the vote and the right to earn money. But shit eh, this token fucking ONE day, pisses me off because it is so bloody patronising.
We are still on the whole considered to be some sort of minority group, especially when we get uppity about the massive injustices we suffer. How stupid is that ? Our overall situation is neither fair or just and we cannot hope to move on as society until we seriously address the incredible unfairnesses and inequalities between men and women. The current crop off governments have absolutely no will to do this and I doubt that the next ones will either, nor our societies with their power bases still largely in the hands of men who have absolutely no motiviation to give the little women anything. Grrr . . . Good day to too! (but make it everyday). We’ve taken massive backward strides over the last 10 years AND IT SUCKS.
I’m guessing you didn’t sponsor a mo last November, then, Link?
Happy day! Link, I think it’s good to take stock one day of the year.
Rob, my Firefox browser is the newest version & it’s okay. Are you on Mac or PC?
Here’s the Miranda Divine response to IWD. Look at this deranged piece of strawman arguing in your new Brisbane online paper. By taking academic quotes out of context, it argues that “progrssive” “urban sophisticates” can’t distinguish between male and female abuse of power (yes, inner-city feminists have “sympathy for offenders”):
http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/news/opinion/sympathy-for-offenders-misplaced/2007/03/07/1173166801442.html
I like the bit where she quotes Peter Hollingworth to make her point.
Well, I’m a progressive outer-suburban sophisticate (!) and I’d argue that it’s easy to tell the difference. The male abuse of power is usually the one involving either a fist, a dick, or a signature. Sometimes more than one of those things at a time.
Actually, you know, that Miranda Devine piece is quite clever. The initial proposition, that you Do. Not. Have. Sex. With. A. Minor, ever, is one that no rational person with disagree with anyway, and after that all is unaddressable chaos. It takes a lot of concentration to write an article so full of twisted logic, invalid analogies and ham-handed segues that nothing in it makes enough sense to refute.
Oh FFS. ‘WOULD diasagree with’.
I think her point was that some apparently rational people are disagreeing with the proposition. But then she ignores the fact that there have been debates about female offenders in which the opposite position was taken; that they have been treated too leniently compared with male offenders. So the crux of her argument
is fallacious. All so she can whip up a little more indignation about the morality towel slipping a bit more. Naughty progressives get your filthy fingers off Miranda’s taboos.
I like Link’s anger and I think for women down the socioeconomic scale the gains are particularly fragile. Happy Women’s day to all.
I’m on a PC, weathergirl. Doesn’t seem to affect any other site.
Yet another Hallmark Holiday? Wow.
Happy International Woman’s Day.
Eddy Haskell: “My, what a lovely dress you’re wearing today, Mrs. Cleaver”
Ms Cleaver: “Why, thankyou, Eddy.”
Happy International Women’s Day, all!
How about taking a trip to some developing countries and get some perspective, or better still, hang out with some refugee women who are right here in OZ or some of the womens shelters i’ve worked with, and then come back and say that.
DOnt ever ever ever take the hardwon gains for granted. Globally there is a long lway to go, and this day means a hell of a lot to our sisters around the world.
I’ve asked people a number of times recently. It’s discourteous to raise extraneous matters on a thread just because it’s a new one. That’s what the Saturday Salon is for. If it’s not still on the comments sidebar, you can nevertheless find it by scrolling down the main page. In future, I’m just going to delete totally extraneous comments, and I’d ask people please not to reply to them.
Oops, that’s me. Sorry, Kim.
No probs, Rob, but please take heed. It has been happening on a number of threads lately.
