Yeah but the SCA is just a nerd dating agency and an excuse to frock up, hit stuff and get drunk.

You're saying that like it's a bad thing!

Sorry, couldn't resist. You're quite right, a harmless excuse for drunken rollicking is quite different from the mystical fabrications which just decide to create their own mythology around ancient deities because they like the look of them but not the existing mythos.

Not that there isn't an awfully long tradition of religions being rebadged in exactly this way.

Yeah but the SCA is just a nerd dating agency and an excuse to frock up, hit stuff and get drunk. Whereas the touchy feely we're all the universes children cosmic harmony you-are-some-one-special ethos is central to the New Age thing -- believe me, you are nobody special at all to Isis. Isis does not give a shit about you.

It always amazes/amuses me the popularity of ancient egyptian religion in new age circles since it has to be one of the absolute least democratic, least egalitarian, least touchy feeling world views going round.

You could say much the same thing about the popularity of Knightly and Chivalric costumes/recreations at Ren Fairs and SCA meets. The attraction seems to be imagining oneself to be part fo the mover/shaker elite, surrounded by all this tradition and aesthetically pleasing accoutrements, without needing to reenact the misery of the peasants/serfs/slaves that underlay the whole system.

At least SCA types have the excuse that waving around big swords is just damned cool. The ritual mysticism of the neo-Egyptians isn't very exciting by comparison.

Around my place if a cat and a fox are spotted at the same time, the cat goes first closely followed by the fox. The damage done by wild cats has to be seen to be believed .

Thanks Kim. I had done various google images searches buit not that one. I found the site.

It always amazes/amuses me the popularity of ancient egyptian religion in new age circles since it has to be one of the absolute least democratic, least egalitarian, least touchy feeling world views going round.

I've tried to get my cat to feed the family but he feigns ignorance at the sight of the can opener. Then again, he doesn't have opposable thumbs, so it would be hard for the widdle iddle boy.
