I’m not convinced the shrill crap in the Oz makes much of a difference to anyone

The Oz has painted itself into a corner that will be difficult to get out of. It might be too much work to try - it could just be left as is, servicing the Tory rump.

The more important effect would be on how it impacts on the political class itself.

Yes, it's the ability to delineate the extremes of acceptable opinion that is really powerful, rather than the explicit editorial stance of a newspaper.

No effect, no. But how much effect? I'm not convinced the shrill crap in the Oz makes much of a difference to anyone - perhaps the tabloids do. The more important effect would be on how it impacts on the political class itself.

He tends to only jump on to bandwagons that are going to roll across the finish line anyway (Whitlam in 72, Blair in 97).

Very true - but it would be equally naive to suppose his endorsement has no effect.
