Long Weekend Monday Spruiking: Royalist Edition

So, throughout Orstraya except for that big bit in the West, today is the Queen’s Birthday holiday. At least the sun’s finally come out this weekend along the NSW coast.

I thought the links requested today should reflect the occasion. So, what are the best brickbats and bouquets you’ve read regarding monarchy in general, and the Windsors in particular?

I don’t have a special link, but I offer up this from Ambrose Bierce’s The Devil’s Dictionary, which covers an awful lot of possible bases:

ABSOLUTE, adj. Independent, irresponsible. An absolute monarchy is one in which the sovereign does as he pleases so long as he pleases the assassins. Not many absolute monarchies are left, most of them having been replaced by limited monarchies, where the sovereign’s power for evil (and for good) is greatly curtailed, and by republics, which are governed by chance.

The British people are about to roll out the bunting and crack open the beer-crates to celebrate 80 years of tormenting, stunting and warping an innocent person. This woman was seized at birth, taught by her mother to chant “I am not normal, I am not normal” when she could barely walk, instructed to cauterise any emotions she might haltingly develop, denied a free choice over her job or husband or religion, and forced to work, work, work in unimaginably boring conditions long after her contemporaries had retired. Her name is Elizabeth Windsor. Her tormentors call her “The Queen”.

Am at work today. Presumably my hard-core republican brethren are also, or forever be branded hypocrite!

And she loathed the shopkeeper’s daughter, Maggie Thatcher, was amused by our very own Lounge Lizard Paul Keating, and was apparently not troubled by the possible advent of an Australian Republic despite John Howard’s monarchist grovelling and rigged referendum. Wonder what she will make of Kevin Rudd?

Grace: I wouldn’t be surprised if her first comment was “Well, John, you are looking younger aren’t you!”
