Stop challenging my beliefs

Thanks to the time-sucking wonderful Facebook, I came across this quote from conservative blogger TigerHawk:

Don’t get me wrong. I like visible cleavage as much as anybody. As far as I’m concerned, let’s have more of it. But how will those of us who believe that political feminism has outlived its usefulness sustain that belief if one of the nation’s leading newspapers insists on deconstructing Hillary Clinton’s neckline?

How indeed?

What sort of feminism is not political?

So how is HC’s neckline going?

Facebook is a time waster. I asked Stephen Merchant to be my “friend”, knowing full well it’s not the real dishy Stephen Merchant.

    Sigh!!!

I don’t think I’ve ever seen someone quite so defensive. Is Hooters pushing dissenters out of helicopters these days?

Simple: people like him and the “political feminists” (can we refer to a non-gendered construction as a “straw man”?) who believe history is some sort of ratchetting linear progression are both mistaken.

…those of us who believe that political feminism has outlived its usefulness

What the? I guess women around the world really have achieved full gender equality and I must have just slept through it?

“I’m sure Edelman must have thought that it is just like a woman to ask about withdrawal when a surge has barely begun. “

Although I note, as in the above little gem, that Jon Swift himself does not miss the opportunity to deliver his woefully sexist puns throughout, I must say do like this little reality check:

“It’s very difficult to argue that racism, homophobia and misogyny don’t exist when so many people insist on acting like racists, homophobes and misogynists. If they would all just shut up, it would make our arguments a lot more persuasive.”

…those of us who believe that political feminism has outlived its usefulness …

Who exactly are these people, and on what do they base such a belief?

More to the point, how much will they pay me for this nice bridge?

PavCat - such people would probably be keen to buy the Minneapolis Bridge

Well, yes. That’s because Jon Swift is a parody persona of a “reasonable conservative”. Of course he’s going to commit revealing gaffes as he presents his reasonable conservative take on politics and culture.

I am a reasonable conservative who likes to write about politics and culture. Since the media is biased I get all my news from Fox News, Rush Limbaugh and Jay Leno monologues.

… thought it was too good to be true…

And I was shocked, and still am when I find the metal parts in bras discarded, dangerous and very bad design.Being afflicted by short-sightedness,it is a bit of a stimulation….to see low cut dresses worn well and with dignity. I wouldnt go overboard with the smart-arse need to make it ,the low v-necks a serious dividing line between real men and those who pretend to be always on the side of women politically. Hilary looks much more attractive,or appealing now ,in photos at least, then her younger days at the beginning of relationshipal matters with Bill. I wouldnt vote for her though, but she certainly doesnt need this shit. I dare say Hilary would accept what I am saying as a real compliment that doesnt,at all, devalue her in anyway,after-all there is no attempt on my part to do so. And isnt that appealing!? I hope so!? If you were offended,I wouldnt even attempt to apologise, same truth,it isnt about tits, but just appealing ,which shouldnt distract from what somebody is presenting, because after all it isnt a orgy,I am sure. And American women, can get a bit tough on how men look,so perhaps the lice in TigerHawks hair are wanting some democracy. Poor Bastard!

The only place I hear people banging on about ‘feminism’ is around my grandmother and my Aunty Joan. Be buggered if I can work out how LP has attracted such types.

Going by his blogroll I think he’s quite serious about believing “that political feminism has outlived its usefulness”, DaOoSG.

Philip, if you want people to actually read your comments (and I assume you do, otherwise why bother?), then please have the courtesy to make them readable. I, for one, have given up trying.

Down and Out of Sài Gòn - I agree to a certain extent, I don’t think it was written entirely without self-reflection.

Casey, what’s really amusing is that there are still real wingnuts who discover Jon’s blog and don’t get the schtick until they’ve well and truly covered themselves in ignominy.

    Tigtog,

yes I imagine some people would! - as for me, I skipped on back to his site and had a bit of a larf, it was more *apparent* once my bout of outrage at that particular comment abated and I actually read the rest of his stuff…..very amusing (both me and him).
