There’s been a vigorous discussion of the government’s “war on drugs” ad campaign on this thread, and on another we’re reflecting on the Coalition being 18 points down in Newspoll. Since it’s well known that Crosby/Textor help to upset our balance of trade with the US through continual import (allowed under the FTA) of American campaigning tactics, I’m wondering why this sort of moving, cogently argued and no doubt highly effective ad hasn’t been tried yet this year. If you squint, you can almost see a rabbit too (though not a hat).

Drugs and freaky dead girls … I’ve been there before. Bad trip.
Don’t know about you, but I’d be freaking out a bit if a little dead girl kept teleporting about the office - not sounding rather peeved that you’re being interrupted at work…
The discerning freedom loving opium smoker demands Afghan Warlord, ask for it by name.
Thank god I’m atheist and missed this retread of the Raygun ‘narcoterrorist’ ads. Not that there weren’t narco-terrorists running cocaine to the US of A, they just forgot to point out that their names were Poindexter, North, Negroponte and amerika’s erstwhile best friend in Panama, Noriega, due for imminent release and perhaps extradition to France for buying an apartment with his CIA stipend.
I notice that ad suggests you can be a successful executive, earning enough to dress your kid rather well, while still using illegal drugs on a basis frequent enough to be observeable and thought about by your offspring. Kinda mixed messages there.
Besides she looks like the kinda person that would be doing a toot or several (Columbian Goverment-backed right-wing militias) at business/social occasions or some killer skunk (home-grown hydroponics) after unwinding after a hard day’s marketing/litigating/fund raising for a very large company. Can’t really see her as a serious consumer of Aghanistan’s finest.

]. Now, to the topic ….
Couldn’t see that picture on my 186 stream-driven computer so I went to text of the Feminista link [which, by the way had a nice concise look at the economics of counterfeit luxury goods thanks
If you smoke your own home-grown chop-chop or whoopie-weed, if you drink yourself into oblivion with your own home-brew, the only ones you eventually hurt is yourself - and those around you. If. however. you BUY your thrills and joys, there’s a better-than-even chance you will be sending your money to some of the nastiest and most destructive mongrels on the planet, whether they hang around in jungles, in desert mountains, in slums …. or in the finest corporate board-rooms of our great cities.
There are probably whole container-loads of PhDs, articles in scholarly journals and hard-cover books written on how rebel and terrorist groups throughout history have financed their operations, as well as how some prominent companies got started..
As for anyone getting frantic that mentioning the links between drugs and terrorism must be a “Right”wing conspiracy …. get real! …. The “Right” have plenty of things that need explaining themselves. Like, [i] some of the strange activities connected with illegal drugs by the CIA during and after the Viet-Nam War; [ii] Why US President George the First failed to knock out the Medellin Cartel with airstrikes despite entreaties to do so (Oh, that’s right, it was because he didn’t want to help the leftist FARC, isn’t it?); [iii] Why the US could defend its frontiers against Soviet missiles but is helpless against slow twin-engined AeroCommander aircraft flying cocaine into unguarded airstrips that every rancher and farm-hand for miles around knew about; [iv] All the money that goes into Presidential and Congressional election campaigns is virginal and as pure as the driven snow, isn’t it? [v] As Amphibious mentioned: Noriega. That operation was to restore democracy and mom’s apple-pie in Panama, wasn’t it? And the list goes on and on and on …..
