Routine Acts of Gutless Bastardry Redux

“While the government is weak, any attempt to focus on a Sino-sycophantic Rudd administration as a peril to our national security will prove ineffective and futile.”

Jonathan J Ariel at OLO

Here’s how a government that isn’t Sino-sycophantic does business:

A CHINESE man who has been in Australia for 10 years could face execution if he is deported after having his visa cancelled, refugee advocates said today.

The man, known as DP, has been held in detention for four years since his visa was revoked after Chinese authorities issued an arrest warrant in his name.

But the warrant was unsigned and undated and the man may be executed if he is deported to China, the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre said today…

The Oz, 11 September (via Counteract Now)

There are a few more problems with the warrant - quite simply, there’s not enough information in the warrant to definitely identify Mr DP (or Mr Qi) as the person the Chinese authorities are after. Nonetheless:

A Chinese detainee, who is recovering from surgery to remove three razor blades, will be deported as soon as he is fit to fly.

The man, known as Mr Qi, was taken to Sydney’s Bankstown Hospital from the Villawood Detention Centre yesterday.
(ABC News, Thursday 13 September)

How is this possible? Here’s Robodork’s position on the issue:

A spokeswoman for Immigration Minister Kevin Andrews says Australia sought and received a promise that Mr Qi would not face the death penalty if charged and convicted on his return.

Well, that’s alright then isn’t it?

Does the Chinese government do non-core promises as well?

Thanks for posting on this. I was going to post on this on my blog, but got distracted.

I am disgusted at the government always asking for “assurances” - and when they get broken they say “not our fault”.

Decisions like this will haunt the minister, and i for one will remind him of it if I ever see him. I did see Kevin Andrews on George St during the Liberal Party conference and just looked at him and just said “shame”… he tried to ignore me, but his eyes said more.

Its absolutely appalling that the Australian government is going to deport this man against the wishes of the United Nations and human rights groups based on a flimsy warrant with massive holes and a flimsy assurance that this man will not be executed.

This promise of no execution comes from the country that executes more people than the rest of the world combined!

I just wish that the Australian media and the Australian Labor Party would make a bigger deal over this issue instead of worrying about who will lead the coalition in the future. A mans life is at stake…doesn’t that mean anything anymore?
