Just read about another instance of the Catholic Church striking a PR own goal. The Archdiocese of Los Angeles has to find $660 million to pay compensation to victims of paedophile priests, so they are selling off church property. The choice of property to sell in Santa Barbara is raising eyebrows and ire: they are selling off modest homes where groups of nuns live together.
The article also notes that the bishop lives in splendour in a large house that would likely sell for well over $2million. The kicker? That house is a former convent.

Also getting a bit of respect for you blog owners and moderators. Having just started one that is controversial in the mildest possible way, I was nevertheless taken aback by how many people, even ones I know well, suddenly want to test the defamation laws of the state at my expense. Are we blog commenters really so full of bile? Do you have to delete swathes of unpublishable comments at Larvatus?

It seems Ann Coulter has to keep on upping the outrageousness ante in order to get headlines. Her new book is called If Democrats Had Any Brains, They’d Be Republicans. and she suggests that women’s right to vote should be revoked because they tend to vote more for Democrats, and that’s baaaad.

I’m having a quiet one in memory of Marion Jones’ good name. “No regrets, no apologies”, I’d have liked her to declare, as I genuinely think that the cliché “society made me do it” applies, if to anyone, to professional athletic cheats in the modern era.

I suspect that John Howard had a treble on the Wallabies, All Blacks and Coalition all losing. He’s just waiting to call the election once it is obvious that the bookies have to pay him out. One more disastrous parliamentary week for him should have the money in the bag and he can retire as a winner even after losing the election.
Looks like Matt Price has some health problems.
