Very good point Lindsay@24.

I wonder if Rick Wallace, who wrote this predictable O.O. Rudd bash, is aware of this distinction. If he does know he has written a very confusing piece, starting off with mention of “The Exclusive Brethren” then talking of “Brethren” for the rest of the article. Both completely different organisations.

I notice he makes no mention of the links between The Liberals and The Exclusive Brethren and the very dodgy attempts they made to influence election results, for the conservative cause, both here and in New Zealand.

Jaques, There needs to be the understanding that there is a universe of difference between the “Exclusive Brethren” and the (open) Brethren. The Brethren are much less exclusive than the Salvation Army. Uniting Church, Anglican Church….. In fact would be the least exclusive of Chrstian Denomnations. They are however VERY congregationalist – there is NO heirarchy and no assembly (congregation) has any influence over another. As a result there is a large variation in what is classed as “acceptable” between cassemblies. Ie I know of one assembly in Brisbane that (at least used to 10 years ago) keeps men’s jackets and ladies hats in the entry foyer for the use of those who “forgot” to come to church “correctly attired”.

I have been associated with a number of Christian denominations over the last 60 years and have been a member or associate of many of them. I have preached in Church of Christ, Wesleyan Methodist, Baptist, Presbyterian and Brethren. Although I am currently a member of the Anglican Church and a member of the Parish Council I am not allowed to preach in an Anglican Church, at least in the Brisbane Diocese

I have to admit with news that this Rudd Labor govt are going to give $70m in funding to the Exclusive Brethren, I continue to lose faith in this govt as time goes on.

Not that long ago Howard castigated some Muslims for not integrating into Australian society. A couple of weeks later he was defending the EXCLUSIVE Breathen whose name should be a bit of a giveaway that the don’t want to integrate. Talk about yer rank hypocracy.

Next thing you know we’ll be seeing an actual Christian Right arising. Watched a documentary on 4 Corners a while back about the Christian Right in America by Pelosi’s daughter…scary stuff. All this talk about the need to ‘retake’ the nation from Hollywood and all those secular dangers.
