Technical issues?

As well as moving servers, we installed the new version of WP. If anyone’s having any problems with the functionality of the site, please report them here.

Update 06/12/07 We’ve still got some issues to sort out, it seems, so in the interim we’re still blogging at LP in Exile where you can read all our most recent posts.

    Ayo, wassup, niggaz!!!

If this comment offends and alienates, then everything is working fine.

  3. mick

    Another test.

And they’d none of them be missed, they’d none of them be missed.

And if we really could expand the precession of the equinox away from the usual equilibrium what new means of seasons may we discover. Or would be bugger everything up?

  6. mick

Listen, strange women lyin’ in ponds distributin’ swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

  7. fatfingers

Let’s see if there’s a problem issue with the html buttons.

Mick beat me to the “test” gag.

    It seems to be aok.

So are the bugs ironed out, or are the little feckers still gumming up the works?

  16. philiptravers

Not Mickey Mouse and my name not up in lights and a Telstra Bill coming my way soon, but my name is in the box! Yah! To the powers that be! If only I was a Tolmec! Now where is the basalt I must carve a vision of myself!?

So who was behind the deliberate spam attack on LP anyway? It certainly worked – down for the whole final month of the election, wasn’t it?!

But whodunnit? The Islamofascists, or the antiIslamofascistfascists, or the notreallyantiIslamofascistjustFascistspretendingtobeantifascists?

And if I had links for all them groups, would your bloddy spam software still consider me a troll?

  24. Robert Merkel

Gandhi, we’ve no evidence of a political motive for the spam attack. None. If there were, we’d be pursing the matter vigorously.

    See Hanlon’s Razor.

  25. Jacques Chester

    Welcome back, LP!

Gandhi, seconding Robert Merkel, Club Troppo also had a few massive spam attacks, which we weathered this time. It was just terrible timing for LP.

  26. pablo

    Robert.
In light of the shameful acts in the seat of Lindsey and quite apart from LP being Brisbane based, don’t you think it might be of interest to the AEC. I appreciate your point about no evidence, but if the AEC can get the Feds interested enough to chase the Lindsey mob including a State Lib exec maybe the AEC would be partial to a wider inquiry.

  27. Bring Back LP to LP

I appreciate your point about no evidence

Apparently not, pablo. It’s non-political spam, everybody on the internet gets it, along with periodical irrational fury and cyclical paranoia.
Apart from anything else, the troglodytes from Lindsay weren’t even competent enough to get somebody else to do their shitsheeting—they’re hardly Ian Fleming evil geniuses.
    Welcome back LP to LP!

  28. via collins

    Hoorah!

While LP returns to normality, Gerard Henderson agrees that the second worst defence minister in history is leading the Liberal Party.

Perhaps Gerry suffered a massive spam attack as the Fluffington-Joneses exited Kirribilli…

  29. FDB

I’m having spam for dinner to celebrate.

  30. FDB

    Hmmm…

When I hit ‘submit’ nothing happened – via collins’ message still at the bottom, my text still in the box. Refreshing the home page showed my comment was there though, which is I guess the main thing.

If the same thing happens to a lot of n00bs you’re gonna get a pile of multiple postings though.

  31. FDB

Yep, fraid to say the same ting happened again. I’m using Firefox 1.0.6 though, I didn’t realise I was so behind the times. Installing 2.something now…

  34. BearCave

Unfortunately, spam attacks are all too common now on Google newsgroups. A newsgroup I regularly contribute to has been under much strain this year because of trolls having no regard for the facility others wish to use for public discourse.

So, while not assuming to know the precise cause of LP’s spam attack, perhaps I see a pattern here. One perhaps best articulated by borrowing an few words from Al Gore’s book ‘The Assault on Reason’:

“In the immediate aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, there was for a very short time a quality of vividness and clarity of focus in our public discourse that reminded some Americans – including some journalists – that vividness and clarity used to be more common in the way we talk with one another about the problems and the choices that we face.

Faith in the power of reason – the belief that free citizens can govern themselves wisely and fairly by resorting to logical debate on the basis of the best evidence available, instead of raw power – was and remains the premise of American democracy. This premise is now under assault.

The truth is that American Democracy is now in danger – not from any one set of ideas, but from unprecedented changes in the environment within which ideas either live and spread, or whither and die. I do not mean the physical environment; I mean what is called the public sphere, or marketplace of ideas.”

As a developing Communications student, I’m really glad that I managed to cross paths with this new book from Al Gore.

  35. Zarquon

    You’ve got spam

    Also “link” button didn’t work.

  36. tigtog

I’ve removed the Comments Quicktag plugin (which provided the HTML markup buttons above the Comments Box) to see whether that old plugin is incompatible with the new Wordpress upgrade.

    Testing.

  37. tigtog

OK, that worked for me. The comment immediate appeared.

How is it now for the rest of you?

  38. Robert Merkel

Home, where my love lies waiting silently for me…

Let’s see if this indeed works properly.

  39. Robert Merkel

Hmmm…that didn’t post properly, give it another try.

  40. Robert Merkel

Ok, cleared my browser cache. Let’s give it another go.

  41. Robert Merkel

    nope it’s still not working.

  42. tigtog

Testing using IE instead of Firefox.

  43. tigtog

Nope, had to refresh the page to see my comment that time.

  44. tigtog

testing again using Wordpress Default theme

  45. tigtog

    That worked fine.

Seems like it might be a K2 problem with the new version of Wordpress, rather than a wordpress problem per se.

  46. tigtog

Hm. Wonder if it’s related to whatever bug isn’t rendering the template styling for LP for me in Firefox.

  47. Robert

    Testing!

  48. Mark

    This comment is a test.

  49. mick

Commenting seems to work from this cafe in Berkeley.

  50. Brian

Just wondering why the page width is so narrow.

  51. Robert

Sorry, Brian — the “flexible width” option was deleted from the new version of the theme, and the default width was 780px. I’ve increased it to 950px now. Is that better?

  52. dany le roux

Nice to see there is only beer and no fags this time.

  53. Robert Merkel

Do they know it’s Christmas time at all?

I dunno, but we’ll find out with this test post…

  54. tigtog

testing now that I’ve turned off the Quicktags plugin

  55. tigtog

OK, same as at my blog – the comment is accepted on this page, the comments text input box disappears for approx 30 seconds and then returns.

So, still a minor bug. Is it livable?

  56. Robert

    Testing…

  57. Robert

Tigtog, I think that’s a neat new feature. It prevents people double-posting, but doesn’t stop them posting two comments in a row.

  58. tigtog

I hadn’t thought of it that way, but you could well be right.

  59. tigtog

testing: does the shortlinks plugin still work with the new WP?

    http://larvatusprodeo.wordpress.com/

    ETA: indeed it does!

  60. Adam

So are you still gonna make this site work again, or just remain in exile forever? :-D No hurry of course, just curious.

  61. Paul Burns

This might just be my crapped out dial up computer, but it takes quite a while to type out a comment of any length because it seems to stick if you know what I mean.Short comments are okay. Also it seems to take a while to register your name in the comment list. Not complaining. Just sayin’.

  62. FDB

    Hey up admins!

Any chance of a return of the handy html tag buttons above the comments box?

Also, the header at the top of the page no longer links to the homepage.

That’s all though. Good to be back.

  63. Kim

  64. Paul Burns

I imagine you’re already aware of it, but there are some very odd technical things happening at the end of the Missy Higgins thread.
