This really is the first bad press Labor has got since winning the election. They weren't expecting it, and perhaps thought their oponents in the Opposition and the media would behave with some decency. Then they discovered they were living in the real world. What's the bet they'll never ever get caught out like this again! At least, that's what I hope.
PS Now have Windows 2000 Professional. Long story, but anyway ...

If there was any seriousness about this issue by the opposition they would be talking about trading tax cuts for carers pensions.

Beating up non-issues. Pretending to care about the downtrodden masses. Completely hypocritical calls to support things they only ever did for politics. Proposing policies without the least regard to consequences. The co-alition is getting the hang of opposition quite quickly. Last week they looked like they were having more fun than they've had in a decade. You'd almost think they prefer it this way. Playing politics without the distraction of running the country and hiding their own screw ups.

Laurie Oakes is on the ball with this one.

Lindsay Tanner went very close to unloading on Sundays,"Insiders", but just seemed to just hold back. I am in wonder at the patience that Labor has shown towards "The Australian" and that this trenchant critique should come from within the Newscorp camp is extraordinary.

Making up stories is what Laurie is effectively accusing the company flagship of doing. He is, of course, completely right. Blaming labor for not dealing with it well looks mighty like blaming the victim for their own abuse.

Oppositions and the media constantly collude in these games to pressure governments to declare their hand well in advance of any need to do so. The media love it because it boosts their self-importance and oppositions love it because it makes them look like they are setting the agenda.

The carers' and seniors' bonuses were poor decisions by Howard's mob, taken for completely opportunistic reasons. Welfare and community support programs should not be cobbled together in such a piecemeal fashion.

Now of course every special interest group in the country will be trying to get their favourite bit of pork on the front page in "Will the minister deny?" type stories. Rudd should declare that no comment whatsoever will be made about rumours, gossip, alleged leaks or any other speculation about the budget and make his ministers stick to it. Sure there will be some short term political pain but if it ends the games and allows some decent considered policy-making it will be well worth it.

Geoff: well, that last sentence was really the only issue, I think. That it took so long for the Government to say something concrete about it gave the chance for everyone else to build up a head of steam...

I think the bigger question is why did the Lab party do the old "rabbit in the headlights" trick until Rudd came back?
It was either a way of floating an idea via a leak, a complete beat up, or a backdown.

I would have bet a lot of money on it being the 2nd one, except for the lack of any response from the rudderless Lab party over the few days in question.

The "truth" that matters in this saga was that a Carers bonus had been paid every year for the past four years, as part of surplus-driven budget largesse. Unsurprisingly, many people getting it were less interested in the dubious vote-buying provenance of the payment - let alone the arcane detail of the Treasury forward estimates - and more interested in finding out whether or not the bonus would be paid again this year. All Rudd needed to do was confirm that it would be paid in 08 and that thereafter the government would ensure structural changes to Carers payments sufficient to ensure that reliance on one-off surplus dependent bonuses would be a thing of the past. And it took him way too long to do it.
