Guest post by Tanja Kovac: Annotating the Governance and Communities summitteers

Following previous posts from Robert Merkel and Ben Eltham on the participants in the 2020 summit streams on sustainability and a Creative Australia, we’re pleased to be able to publish another parsed list of summitteers – this time Tanja Kovac casts her eye over the participants in the Governance and Communities streams. In other summit commentary online today, Bernard Keane at Crikey wonders how the thing will actually work and if it’s going to be dominated by industry advocates looking for a bucketful of dollars, and for Crikey subscribers, Overland editor Jeff Sparrow looks at the summit and elitism and reveals the unbelievable truth of the horrible jingle that accompanied John Howard’s “Future Directions” manifesto in 1988.

Tanja’s annotated lists are over the fold.

The Crikey article is the usual snide smartarseary. Yes, I know the Summit is worth criticising and maybe it will turn out to be useless, but it’s the tone of these sorts of comments which irritates, because the writers don’t seem to have put any thought into what they’re writing at all.

It’s revealing how many people pay lip-service to saying ‘how important the arts are’ but just can’t help sniggering about a room full of ‘luvvies’. God forbid, that an actor, or writer, or director actually have some intelligence and are capable of using it. Guess what, Claudia Karvan’s an extremely good looking woman, so we couldn’t possibly take her seriously at all. Could we?

This Summit deserves criticism, but articles like Crikey are just lazy. It’s why I don’t subscribe to Crikey anymore.

Paul Kelly of the Oz has a PhD? In what?

  3. 3 MarkNo Gravatar

Maybe he’s got an honorary doctorate and is one of those folks who thinks that he should use the title?

  4. 4 FineNo Gravatar

How will they ever get Gerard Henderson and David Marr to:

    (a) have a civil conversation with each other
    (b) shut up.

  5. 5 MarkNo Gravatar

LOL is overused, but I just actually did literally and not metaphorically, Fine!

  6. 6 AmandaNo Gravatar

Maybe he’s got an honorary doctorate and is one of those folks who thinks that he should use the title?

Oh I hope so, one does like to have one’s prejudices comfirmed sometimes.

  7. 7 MarkNo Gravatar

Did Dr Shane Warne get a guernsey?

  8. 8 FineNo Gravatar

Oh, how I wish he had!

  9. 9 Ben ElthamNo Gravatar

Fine, there’s been a bit of discussion about the value of the Creative participants at the 2020 on my previous thread

I have absolutely no problem at all with screen actors being represented at the summit. But I am concerned that there are no game designers or new media artists, and barely a handful of publishers or contemporary musicians. Let alone cultural policy analysts …

  10. 10 FineNo Gravatar

Going back to that previous thread…I agree with you and I wasn’t having a dig at you at all. It’s the lazy criticism which irritates me, not yours.

Dr Mohamad Abdalla Male QLD (Islamic Research Unit, Griffith University)”

Will they be fighting it out to tell us which of their respective gods is ther right one to lead Australia into the future?

Are they there to balance out Philip Adams?

Taking Mark’s advice, to “keep a close eye on Andrew Bolt’s blog”, led me to this piece of radical fiscal conservatism:

    Rudd wants your last $20

“Centrelink has hired (Dun And Bradstreet) to collect 62,000 debts worth between $20 and $100, dating back eight to 12 years. The debts were mostly accrued because of welfare assistance overpayments by Centrelink and were waived by the Howard government. ”

Shamefully, only the tele and abc, and a bolt commenter, seemed to have deemed it newsworthy so far.

That nice Ms Macklin, on her highest of horses, reckons “there is nothing wrong with forcing welfare recipients to pay back old debts”.

This is what it takes to fund the tax cuts to non-centrelink clients?

The maximum overpayment in this tranche is $100, it’s hardly high roller stuff. If all 62,000 were $100 debts, they were all recovered, and D&B did the dirty work for nix out of the goodeness of there mercantile hearts, the $6 mill odd collected wouldn’t fund cover costs of the Community Cabinet program. The PM’s department gets ~$8 mill to spread the love in that PR stunt.

It might cover a few of the consultants’ invoices to the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations for implementing the program “to expand skills surveys to provide labour market data covering new industries and specific regional locations.”
Didn’t Centrelink used to have that data from when employers called in to say what they needed?

  18. 18 MarkNo Gravatar

I think I saw that on SBS last night. It sucks all right.

And, yes, collecting that data was a prime purpose of the old CES.
