As you might know, Leonard Cohen is warbling his way through a world tour at this very moment. No word on Australian dates as yet, but here’s a little Leonard to, umm, brighten up your Sunday. The video is for the song “Democracy”. I heart Leonard.

(John Cale - Hallelujah)
First we take Manhattan and then we take Berlin…great stuff.
I am crossing all my bits that Leonard comes to Oz.
Thanks Darlene. Any news of an Australian leg of the tour (which I doubt), please let us know.
It is pretty uplifting stuff isn’t it?
I freely admit that Hallelujah moves me to tears when I hear it (apart from when I play it on my ukulele), however I still had a strange urge to slash my wrists while watching this.
Will do, Adrian. The tour is going through to next year, so fingers crossed.
I think Leonard can actually be uplifting, but I also get where you are coming from, Steve.
His live shows are uplifting! I’ve always thought the “music to slash your wrists by” cliche to be very misleading - for me, his lyrics traverse all sorts of aspects of the human condition (to utilise another cliche).
Incidentally, when he toured Australia back in the 80s, I went to the gig at QPAC on my 17th birthday. It’s a treasured memory.
I listen to Leonard Cohen and feel spiritually uplifted.
Same goes w/ the tribute albums like “I’m your Man”.
My favourite lines from ‘Democracy’ perhaps belong on another thread…
It’s coming through a crack in the wall
on a visionary flood of alcohol
Plus there’s a rumour going around that the great man’s coming to Australia, on the leonardcohenforum - Sydney and Melbourne only at this stage. I hope it’s true!
It is one thing to find Cohen permeating the movie soundtrack, “McCabe and Mrs Miller”. But I love it even more when a movie gives you an unsuspected surprise with a Leonard Cohen or a Nick Cave on the soundtrack. Watched El-Lobo on SBS on the weekend and at the end couldn’t turn off the TV until Cohen sang the old Chant for the French Partisan. Here it is on youtube

Big squeal about Leonard coming to Oz.
Thanks for letting us know, Adrian. That is a great line; the “visionary flood of alcohol”..ahh yes.
Now if only Joni would come to.
Thanks also to NanaLevu. Wonderful stuff.
Leonard fans might like to go on The Age’s events waitlist:
