Got convinced to meet some new people for cocktails and had a lovely evening.
Watched Fight Club for the first time. I love Helena.
Did sprints on the oval, better than running around the lake.
hmmm
Oh and watched something on BBC about profittering on the Iraq war while at the gym.
*yawns* back to work? so soon?
I went hawking. Fed a vulture in the morning, watched 2 guys wrestle with some kind of south american demon-bird, then went for a walk in the afternoon with a Harris Hawk. It was fun.
Saturday, apart from blogging a bit, spent the day reading and note-taking from P. J. Marshall’s, The Making and Unmaking of Empires. Britain, India and America c.1750-1783. And dipping into the Penguin edition of The Letters of John and Abigail Adams.
Night watched Wild at Heart - lovely melodrtamatic stuff, The Bill, etc.
Sunday, ditto for reading. Also took some notes from HMS Carysfort log, 1770, about John Hunter’sw shipwreck off the Florida Keys. (2nd Governor of NSW, involved in helping customs policing during 1760s/70s in colonial America).
Sunday night. Dr Who. Watched Kylie Minogue disappear into stardust.(Reminds me of Disney’s Pinocchio for some reason, which was the first movie I ever saw.)Watched Girls from Belarus. Read a bit, to sleep.
Doctor Who was a steaming pile, I’m horrified to say.
*advances towards FDB’s gob with severe expression and industrial soap*
I admire your loyalty TT, but it felt like watching Freo V St Kilda at the Dome 2 weeks back.
FDB thinks: “Oh God I hope nobody is watching AFL here tonight for the first time”.
I thought Dr. Who would be worse, having read the British TV reviews when it was screened in the UK last December.Shades of Poisedon Adventure, Rumpestiltskin,
Titanic (I suppose), the Flying Dutchman and Star Wars. Entirely, almost, delightfully derivative. I kept on trying to pick the homages. The only thing missing was Jiminy Cricket.
“Entirely, almost, delightfully derivative.”
Depending on the adjective to which your qualifier applies, I agree or disagree.
I skipped Dr Who - seen it thanks to the magic of teh innertubes. It didn’t have the sheer cheesy fun of the original Poseidon adventure, but thankfully wasn’t as hair-tearingly awful as the recent remake.
We lazily tidied up a bit, then I walked to town with eldest daughter and the baby. The twelve year old had $20 burning a hole in her pocket, after much consternation she bought herself and the middle child a headband, leaving some change for a horrifying milky concoction from the donut place.
The baby (should really be a toddler now I suppose) got a trolley full of blocks in another vain attempt to get her to start the actual toddling process, rather than scooting around the floor at a high rate of knots. My current suspicion is that we’ll have to tie her hands behind her back Abu Ghraib style to get her to walk, but the wife says that probably isn’t good parenting. I said I would skip the hood part and promised not to take any photos, but she still said no.
Progress on the Jeep continues to be glacial, although I did finally adjust the auto transmission shifter so that Park actually locks the transmission rather than letting 2.2 tonnes of dinosaur roam down the road under the force of gravity. I also replaced all the dead indicator bulbs and put the dashboard back in it. If only it had a rear window…
“If only it had a rear window…”
Presumably so you can drive around in reverse solving murders.
No FDB, so I could hook up with Grace Kelly, duh!
Thanks for the Kransky konnection, Mark. They’re a real treat.
Mark and all:
Hectic time lately - just now getting over a very long, tiring trip for the untimely, completely unexpected funeral of a highly-skilled technical operator in the prime of life. He worked in a high-stress job with long hours, irregular shiftwork and frequent urgent recalls from days-off; he had a massive heart attack and could not be saved despite on-the-spot well-trained CPR and swift professional treatment. During the funeral, I couldn’t help but think of Melbourne’s memorial to the movement for an Eight-Hour Day …. maybe we need another Eight-Hour Day movement.
Yippeee!! Kransky Sisters are coming to Central Queensland [unfortunately, I won’t be able to go to their performances - this time].
Hey, when Billy Connelly comes back to Australia …. wonder how the Kransky Sisters would go on a double-bill with him - in alternating acts?
Saw the Kransky Sisters in Warragul (Vic) a few weeks ago: very good.
Now, in Satchmo voice:
“Goodbye, Dolly
Yes, goodbye Dolly!
It’s so nice to see your back
When you depart.
You’re head does swell, Dolly.
I can tell, Dolly:
You jes’ had to take a swipe
At poor old Brenda, now…..”
