Oh, Jesus on a stick!

If there's any pensioner (insert majestic fanfare) our there that is eating dog food to survive, their problem isn't poverty, it's innumeracy.

Canned pet food is more expensive than canned human food at *every* price level.

How has it seemingly become acceptable in our ‘Boom State’ for some single and widowed pensioners to subsidise part of their meal intake with pet food, just to make ends meet?

wtf? This isn't talkback radio, Wayne. Do you have any evidence for this? Or are you perhaps indulging in the spin you so abhor?

Plus there is a Newspoll as well. It's looking tight on paper but remember that the @PP result on both polls include the Nats, who are not going to be forming a coalition with the Libs.

Hello, my name is Wayne Thompson.
I am a 46 year old, happily married husband, father and Karrinyup resident for some 14 years.

I am a patriotic West Australian, and an even prouder Australian who loves anything sport related – particularly when Australian’s are involved.

I like to relate to people from all walks of life, and I communicate well with all of these people in the course of my business activities – day in and day out. The one common and unanimous subject that stands out amongst all these different people when we really get to talking is the fact that right now they are all very, very upset – angry, mad, even incensed about the deplorable way the current State Government (through self-adulation, arrogance, indulgence, inaction and sitting on its hands) has allowed society standards and expectations in this State to disintegrate into the abyss.

No longer is there a Justice System in W.A. – just the stench of unfairness and inadequacy in a completely illogical Legal System. One that obviously only keeps a select band of barristers happy!

I regularly take the time to listen, respect, and help the elderly wherever possible.
How has it seemingly become acceptable in our ‘Boom State’ for some single and widowed pensioners to subsidise part of their meal intake with pet food, just to make ends meet? Anyone left in any doubt about the hardships faced by hundreds of ‘innocents’ in our community these days only have to listen in to 6PR talkback radio to keep abreast with the Real News!

For as long as I can remember, it has always been my ambition in life to make a difference in whatever I did.
Not as a ‘silent’ member of the cold party machines’ that are so obviously out of touch, and even more regularly out of control – but as an Independent who can make the others accountable for their actions, as an Independent who can stop the rot and make the others sit up and take notice, and as an Independent who can help return society in W.A. to one where people can feel safe, and genuinely happy with their lot in life.

When there are no party’s left fit to vote for, its time to stand up and say “Enough is Enough”, and I’ll throw my own hat in the ring. Yes, as an Independent who will listen and act according to a community’s concerns, expectations and ideals, and that time is now!

Mandatory Sentencing

If elected, one of my main priorities will be to introduce a private members bill into Parliament to take the sentencing powers (for serious and life-threatening/taking crimes) away from Judges, and implement an immediate Mandatory sentence regime where a crime such as Manslaughter will once again attract a set, and suitable punishment/term of imprisonment. Mandatory sentencing for attacks on Public Officers must also be introduced.

If the jails are full, then other facilities need to be opened up and utilised/used to house lower-risk prisoners. Serious Crime MUST attract serious time – or the very fabric of respect for law and order will be lost on society, and there is no turning back when that becomes a reality.

Free Public Transport for Pensioners 24/7

Daylight Saving

Until voted otherwise by the public of W.A., the referendum result should rule the day. We are a Democracy, and as such, we should respect and honour the majority vote.

Extended Trading Hours (including Sunday Trading)

Having been involved in Small Business since 1995, I have always held the belief that the Business Owner or Proprietor should have the right to decide. Relaxing the trading time rules and restrictions would obviously suit some businesses more than others, some staff more than others, and some customers more than others. So while a decision either way could have serious implications for some or all businesses, I strongly feel that as long as that right is retained and protected, I would not resist any motions to change the existing regulations.

Ban portable Multa-nova use in metropolitan area

Another main priority would be to introduce a private members bill banning the use of all portable multa-nova cameras in the immediate metropolitan area. The bill would dictate that the portable multa-nova cameras could only be used on outer country roads – specifically in known and proven ‘death’ trap locations where the legitimate use of the Camera’s could be justified. The bill would dictate that more police would be patrolling the roads, with a far greater focus on driver education.

In tandem with introducing the Bill banning the use of portable Multa-Nova Camera’s in and around the immediate metropolitan area, I will be recommending, and lobbying support for the immediate shut-down and closure of the Road Safety Council. The Council has consistently failed in its designated agenda to reduce trauma and deaths on our roads. The ‘Towards Zero’ report just presented to the Government outlines plans for the States 12-year Road Safety strategy ahead, and involves spending an EXTRA $2.3 billion dollars moving forward. The documents assertions and estimates cannot be backed up or believed based on previous failures and non-performing campaigns – and therefore the Council should be scrapped in its entirety. The money already allocated plus the recommended funding moving forward should be incorporated into providing more police on the roads, and more police on the beat. This State already suffers from an unacceptable ‘Road Rage’ culture, ever present on our roads - and this has been borne out by the failures of previous Road Safety campaigns over the last decade.

Having more Police on the road would once again put them in a position to punish bad driving on the spot, and educate errant drivers – our roads would be that much safer as a direct result. Multa-Nova’s when used by stealth have been proven to do nothing, other than raise copious amounts of money for the State Treasury. I am however in favour of fixed camera’s being utilized 24/7 on our Freeways and Highways, and in the Polly Farmer Tunnel. When they are fixed, and you know they are there, they will serve their purpose (for all the right reasons) and people will tend to drive more appropriately - or continue to pay the consequences accordingly. More portable Multa-Nova cameras are not the serious solution – they have simply become a Camera’s could be justified. The bill would dictate that more police would be patrolling the roads, with a far greater focus on driver education.

More portable Multa-Nova cameras are not the serious solution – they have simply become a scourge on Society as a handful of warts that won’t go away, and the secret is well and truly out.

The current W.A. State Government has proven to be the most ignorant, arrogant and self-indulgent group of under-performers this State has ever seen in its history.
The jails must all be full because most people charged over the last few years are getting away with murder – literally! The elderly continue to be bashed, and robbed, and violated - and crime seems to go on unabated. It would seem there is no longer respect for the uniform of those who are there to protect us, and worse yet there seems to be little or no respect, and/or protection for them in our courts and legal systems. Our hospitals continue to be choking under immense and seemingly endless pressure, and our education system apparently is still under threat from a disgruntled Teaching fraternity.

And for all of that, the Carpenter Government wants us to give them another 4 Years in office.

The State Opposition by their own admission have been a shambles while all this has played out and been allowed to continue. Internal bickering and posturing,
the knives and hatchets have been savage and ruthless for some - and as a Party, they’ve lost a lot of respectability, experience and momentum as a result.

Forget the endless ‘Spin’ – we just continue to go around and around, and before you know it we are right back where we started quite some years ago - or often even worse.

This election is the most important election this State has ever faced, or will face for a long, long time. Financially the State has probably never been better off – but the culture that has been created is not only wrong, it’s out of control. For us all to live the lives that we aspire to live on the road ahead, the right decisions need to be made in this next term of Government. With some common logic and your endorsement, I believe I can create enough of a voice in Parliament to make the difference, and to help make it happen.

Darlene - at least one independent is going to play an important role: Elizabeth Constable. I think it was the Noel Crighton-Browne faction of the Liberal Party that did her out of the preselection that should have been hers - anyway she's gone on to win election after election. Now, the Libs don't have any women left in the lower house - Katie Hodson-Thomas resigned when Troy became leader, Janet Woollard came in as a Liberals for Forests independent, and Sue Walker left (perhaps because of previous leaders Buswell & Birney, perhaps because of the lingering influence of Crighton-Browne).

Then there were the Buswell antics, so the Libs are desperate for an attractive female presence, and Constable has agreed to be in the team (as shadow minister) if not join it (the Liberal Party). I predict there will be many photos of Constable standing next to opposition leader Barnett.

Kwinana looks like another nasty ALP preselection deal. I think they could have had the mayor of Kwinana - an articulate lawyer, young, attractive and female, but decided to go with a party hack, a disciple of despised power-broker Jim McGinty. Anna perhaps can tell us the story ....

Actually, on further reading, the less said about the writing on the website the better. Big chunks seem to have been written by someone else, and make good (if bland and newspaperish) sense, but most of it's error-ridden.

Actually, Katja seems to have the skills to help the old man out a bit.

He doesn't seem to have one simple unifying focus to campaign on, which is often what gets independents over the line. That or being very well-known already, or a former sitting member for a party.

Also, the spelling and grammar could use a touch-up, but then I'm always going to say that. ;)

Just checked out the website of Katja's father, Peter Lambert.

Interested to know whether anyone thinks independents will have a strong part to play in the election. In recent years, we've seen a few indies become in entrenched in Queensland.

Not sure about the "battler" line and "the only blue collar candidate" line.

My dad Peter Lambert is running as an independant candidate for Kwinana.
He has been involved in politics for along time. He is a true battler who has strong views about the environment, fair tax distribution, renewable energy creation, law and order enforcement and health and education support.

Please check out His website for more info.

Based on the anecdotal evidence, there were a few festivals and big sporting events etc. on the day. Given that there was an apparent turn-out of around 60%, it's possible that once absentee and postals come in the swing may shrink.

Maybe not so boring now the results from the NT election have come in. You have to admire Anthony Green. Last week he was saying the NT Labor govt might lose a few seats, but given its commanding majority, need not be concerned. Now it's "The NT has always been very conservative."

Will you be having some "narrative" with your soup, Madam?

"Carpenter’s ministers are competent and clean, if lacking in vision, and there have been no major policy disasters.

Well, the Corruption & Crime Commission has weeded out the ministry - but they have a few more reports to release yet ....

Ozy - it's been ALL major policy disasters: howabout Indigenous Affairs? a huge success, but as usual they just dumped the minister and the news cycle moved on. Education is such as success (without mentioning the 'outcomes-based' debacle) that if current trends continue it won't be long 'till the government is only running a primary school system, the secondary will be all private. Health is the most obvious disaster - despite the biggest boom/windfall the state has ever seen we have exactly the problems we had, with only the promise that by 2015 we will have $3 billion of new hospital buildings, but not more beds, nurses or doctors. For a growing and ageing population. The road toll has been a great success, the half-billion dollar black hole called The Office of Shared Services has gone well. The most secretive government in living memory has been criticised by the FOI Commissioner, the Public Sector Standards Commissioner etc - and for their trouble not reappointed and the positions downgraded. I could go on and on and on.

Libs ditch ditch? A canal too far? -trouble is, that was the one Liberal party policy people knew about. There hasn't been enough clear air in their party room during the last four years for any of their leaders to articulate anything but mutual loathing and distrust. More than half the Lib MPs are stained with Buswell's skidmark, having three times elected him as the most suitable among them to be the next premier. With a few dull exceptions, Carpenter's ministers are competent and clean, if lacking in vision, and there have been no major policy disasters. I hope Kevin Rennie's right about Carpenter switching to vaudeville when he has his own mandate.
