Kim.

Strewth, I had no end of bother trying to get a stock-standard avatar before I gave it away as a waste of effort …. and now you want me to create my own?

2. Kim

You don’t have to if you don’t want to, Graham! I thought it was fun.

3. Damteg

I actually went to do it
Got to the page and was faced with the choice of male or female. Are they really binary opposites. If so where am I to move my cursor. Cant we have some choice in between. Or am i missing it? Possibly looking too deep? Do I think sex, gender, sexuallity? Is it how i identify or how others view me externally?
Or is it just a bit of fun and i should get on with making myself a bloody avatar!
Maybe i will try again ;)

4. Phil

Token (not cash for) comment just to show off my new Gravatar…..which should show up shortly……I hope.

5. Damteg

I think I did it.
Does this mean I am a cool kid now?
Somehow i dont think so, cool and me have never really been best buds.

6. Damteg

Kim
I needed to RSVP the term “Ani”
Tried to find a direct email but couldnt

7. Klaus K

It doesn’t quite look like me. Ah well, close enough.

8. Lefty E

Couldnt make it work within 5 secs – so lost interest & gave up.

And that’s a lesson for all you programmers!

9. Klaus K

Should show up sooner or later

10. professor rat

All the terminal losers are doing it this way. This is BULLSHIT!

Just my 2c

11. Kim

Damteg, I’m more or less over all that now, and I think I’ve forgotten the login, but if you like, you could always email me at yellowvinyl [at] gmail [dot] com.

Lefty E, a lot of the time taken is picking the right nose and stuff! I’m not entirely satisfied with mine because my skin’s a shade darker, and it doesn’t really do cheekbones, but hey – it’s an avatar not a portrait!

I’m not planning to discard my pirate queen gravatar though!

12. Lefty E

I couldnt make anything happen at all – except getting a male template. Not inside 5 secs anyway, which is apparently my new concentration sp

13. The Feral Abacus

What a strange experience!

Would Victor Frankenstein have felt something similar the first time he saw life in his creation?

14. Kim

You’re such a bad advertisement for Gen X, Lefty E! ;)

15. Lefty E

I know. I bought a new mobile recently and had to get a Y friend to “make it work”.

16. GW

Further to what Damteg was saying @ #3, I selected male but made mine look female. What does this mean for the self-identity of my avatar?

17. Kim

Geez, Louise, I’m 35 (note crows feet!) and I feel like a “digital native”! But maybe that’s coz I used to be a gadget geek grrrl.

18. Kim

Sorry, GW, crossed – was responding to LE.

I think the difference is partly in whether you end up with breasts and women’s clothing, but there are some odd aspects to it.

19. Kim

Though you still look like a boy to me. I suspect the options for facial features are different.

20. Ranga Tan

It doesn’t do you justice, Miss Berella. Nice rack, though.

21. b.lyle

My gravatar scares me. It’s like hearing myself on tape for the first time.

22. Liam

Yeah, nice. But the cooler kids have been drawing their own faces for yonks.
(damn non-updated Flash, grumble grumble)

23. Sean

Very cute Kim. No wonder all these snags are trying to impress you by pretending to be feminists !P

24. FDB

Strewth! Apart from cheekbones and chin, it’s a pretty good likeness.

I’m supposed to be anonymous here!

25. FDB

Heh.

Looks like gravatar dot com haven’t updated it yet.

Just FYI – I do NOT look like Baroness T.

26. Fmark

What’s with all the giant big heads?

27. Klaus K

“No wonder all these snags are trying to impress you by pretending to be feminists !P”

I think they may be barking up the wrong tree, so to speak.

28. Mark

I think Sean is still licking his wounds after not enjoying a recent thread. Let’s move on.

29. Sean

“I think they may be barking up the wrong tree, so to speak.”

Well I know nothing about Kim’s personal life & since it were just a lame-ish joke, it doesn’t really matter. Mind you, the complete ineffectiveness of the snag/metero gambit doesn’t seem to stop certain young men from trying it on every time O-week rolls around at a University Near You.

Mark, really, I’m OK; thanks for your concern. See that semi colon? I’m even at ease with my sexuality.

30. Mark

Sean: good to know.

31. Klaus K

“Mind you, the complete ineffectiveness of the snag/metero gambit doesn’t seem to stop certain young men from trying it on every time O-week rolls around at a University Near You.”

I don’t doubt it. It’s the main topic covered in the first chapter of the Wannabe Fauxgressive’s Handbook. In my edition it’s just after the section on feigning an interest in buddhism, but that may have been replaced with something else in more recent editions.

32. David

I spent a few minutes playing with it, but couldn’t make it look old enough. I’ll stick with the close-up of one of my chickens for now.

33. Paul Burns

Well, I created myself a manga avatar, so when dies it turn up. So far I seem to be getting the same old question mark. (Or is it suddenly going to pop up with this comment and prove I’m yet again a technological idiot?

34. Laura

Here is mine. It does look reasonably like me. Except my head is not so immensely overblown. (Act surprised)

35. Laura
36. Kim

Actually, why do manga characters always have such disproportionately large heads?

37. Graham Bell

Kim [1 & 2]:

Nah. Couldn’t find anything there that was me …. or maybe it was just the 82kB/week dial-up “service” we have here.

Anyway, you’ve goaded me into looking again at getting an avatar of some sort. Anything has to be better that just a dumb question-mark. ;-)

38. Paul Burns

Have got my avatar on my picture file, but how do I transfer it to LP?

39. Kim

Paul, click on the link to Gravatar under “Leave a Reply” above the comments box and follow the instructions. There’s usually a bit of a time lag between registering it there and it appearing here.

40. Paul Burns

Thanks, Kim. Will try it tomorrow when I’m more alert.

41. Paul Burns

Ah, it worked! I am a computer genius. :)

42. Kim

Good to hear!

43. Graham Bell

Paul Burns [41]:

[[thunderous applause]] :D :D :D [well, what is the emoticon for a happy crowd?]

Shall have another go myself next week; very busy now.

44. The Feral Abacus

Trying out the female abacus. Think I like this better, but still disappointed that I can’t wear dreads.

45. David

Answer to Laura’s OT query on the Christian Kerr thread: I think the chook and her sister are Rhode Island Reds (or a hybrid), but I’m not sure. I picked them up as point-of-lay pullets from the place I buy my chook food. I also have a geriatric Langshan (I think) who still produces the occasional egg.

46. Kim

TFA, the hair choices were rather limited!

47. Not me, no siree!

So how about creating gravatars for others?

Here’s my impersonation of one well known Aus blog identity.

Your guesses will need to be supported by evidence! So stop lying!
