The wisdom of Susan Wicklund – essential listening for Federal Senators and Victorian MPs on abortion rights

The Victorian Parliament is preparing to debate legislation to decriminalise abortion, and the Federal Senate is soon to debate Guy Barnett’s regressive proposal to abolish Medicare funding for abortion performed after the fourteenth week of pregnancy.

In this context, the BBC World Service’s interview with Dr. Susan Wicklund is indeed timely. This interview should be required listening for all Victorian MPs and Federal Senators over the next few days.

Other perspectives from Susan Wicklund on the realities of abortion and of women’s reproductive choices can be found here.

P.S. The first minute or so of the audio is not the Susan Wicklund interview but the tail end of the news bulletin which preceded it.

THanks for this, Paul. Peter Costello has seen fit to weigh into the “debate” (I’m sorry but I feel the need for scare quotes when I use that word in this context) – what business is the Victorian legislation of his?

    He’s a Victorian. Just sayin’.

This is Peter Costello, right, supposedly the favourite of the small-l liberals in the Liberal Party?

    Ah. From The Australian:

Mr Costello’s comments will be seen as a bid to appeal to members of the party’s Right, who were staunch John Howard supporters. They come after anti-abortion advocate Tony Abbott called on Mr Costello to take the leadership, describing him as “undeniably the Liberal Party’s best political asset now that Howard is gone”.

It’s all about the numbers. Turnball’s the new I’m actually a liberal Liberal what’s Petey gonna do? Buddy it up with Tony. They’ve got so much in common after all. They blend the charisma of mouldy blanket with really silly ears that stick out.
