It’s obvious why Turnbull is covering himself with a figleaf with the picture of Queenie on it. There are deep divisions in the Liberal party over precisely that issue and he just doesn’t want to rock the boat – ‘political reasons’ my arse….

Yeah, and might all be very good for Australian democracy too. Problem is I don’t trust a right wing party that sheltered Nazi war criminals, supported the fascist Ustasha, thought Georgew W. Bush had brains, repeated its attempt to smash the worker after first failing 60 years ago (not that Labor has done that much to get rid of Howard’s industrial fascism – there’s still that kangaroo court Building Woekers’ Commission running) generally has a blame the victim mentality about the poor and disadvantaged, tried to ban the CAPA and brought in anri-terror laws that can literally jail you for 20 years for raving over the phone at some one when you’re pissed off at the Government.(If the phone’s tapped.)
Different rider, same decrepit nasty bad tempered biting horse, IMHO.
I’m going to wait 3 months for the Libs to inplode before I really make up my mind about this guy.

I thought Mal was OK on 7.30 Report; calm, assured, jocular, and easy to follow (sorry Admiral Nelson, you just weren’t). He may be bloody bright and draw a line under the Howrd years too: let’s wait and see.

Turnbull’s jibe last night about Rudd’s stupid Republican wedge, when he should have been talking about the ptoblems of world stock markets was a good point.

No, it really wasn’t. Rudd’s was obviously just a cheeky dig and Mal’s OTT umbrage was ridiculous. By the same standard I could say his decision to devote 15 seconds of our time to the terrible childhood burden of living in a rented flat instead of canvasing rescue options for AIG in that time was him ignoring global financial problems. But, it wasn’t. No one likes a whinger, Malcolm.

Rudd is in trouble- Turnbull’s jibe last night about Rudd’s stupid Republican wedge, when he should have been talking about the ptoblems of world stock markets was a good point.
Still, it’s early days yet. Minchin and co could have a brain explpsion as they lose influence and Rudd won’t have to worry then.
Have watched quite a few old newsreels of the young Menzies, I have to say there’s some similarity. And how long was that old bastard in 2nd time round? [Rhetorical Q.]

QE2 – the first squib Kim as you point out @88, and for the reasons Lefty E @ 96 describes. Didn’t take long! Maybe it’s a case of picking your fights and timing….or maybe quite a few socially progressive Liberals and small l’s are going to be a widdle disappointed.

I wonder what old Ratty was thinking today…it was he who favoured Malcolm over Peter King and apparently got him over the line in the bitter 2004 pre-selection battle for the slightly cursed jewel of Wentworth. Surely, he must have known what he was doing when he backed Turnbull or maybe he just realised it was either sooner or later.

It’s an interesting twist in the whole story, a saga lately beyond anyone’s (or at least my) wildest expectations with the whole Costello Memoir’s/leadership destabilisation/personal integrity & legacy meltdown culminating in a snap Lib. leadership spill slash book launch double header!!

Also witnessed a gang of CEO’s/partners law/accounting firms blah coming out a board room right at the time, one looked at his comm. device and said to the others excitedly “he’s got it”, two pumped the air, going “yeah” and all looked pretty stoked. Wonder if this will translate to coffers.

btw. is he the first Catholic (albeit convert) Liberal Leader?

(Re: cursed jewel, like Bennelong, long term it’s turning redder, distributions are going to be vital. Currently, besides the neon & navy & royal blue bits – it’s not so much red, but red with light green and dark green and pink bits and a bit of mauve and some burnt orange….)
