As you say, it is disgracefully lazy reporting. It never ceases to amaze me how easy it is to "spin" an issue. Those tight deadlines mean that journos will generally accept the way an issue is framed in a press release without thinking about it. And you can also count on most of them being quite innumerate, analytic ability not being in their selection criteria. Even the ABC this morning bought this line.
