<i>But I get the feeling that a lot of right-wing ideas are falling into disrepute around the world. Even before the Wall St crash there were signs - the fact that we rejected Work Choices, for instance.
.
Geoffrey Blainey said a long while ago that he could envisage a revival of the Left this century. I’m starting to think he may be right.</i>
.
It's a feature of democracy that you've got competition between sets of ideas. Either side of the spectrum enjoys a certain amount of prestige until the wheels fall of its bandwagon. It's necessary. Like a political party that's been in office to long: complacent, flabby, tired. It needs kicking out.

I meant to say we're about to take distinct turn to the Left - sorry if it didn't make much sense (tiredness).

Sadly true, Graham Bell. The kind of obsessives - the likes of Tony Abbott - often do get to the top. I always have the feeling that many people the Abbott mold have never really left uni politics and seem never to have grown up. I'm talking about real growing up, the kind that knocks a bit of bark off you and gives you a sense of humility. I guess that's not surprising if this class of people go straight form uni politics to electorate office to Parliament.

But I get the feeling that a lot of right-wing ideas are falling into disrepute around the world. Even before the Wall St crash there were signs - the fact that we rejected Work Choices, for instance.

GB [79}:

The problems are not just that the Young Liberals are taken seriously in some circles [not ones I want to mix in though].... but that they then go on to bigger - and worse - things.

Maybe there's a PhD waiting for whoever compares the performance of Liberal Party politicians who started as Young Liberals with that of those who did not? I suspect that such a study would be fiercely opposed.

Mercurius [80]:

Yes but the kids do need immunization against fairly basic scams and dirty tricks .... and they are just not getting very elementary street-smarts in the school system.

The kids have every right in the world to be taught how to protect themselves against the exploiters and manipulators.

PN: <blockquote>"I ... extend an invitation to three classical liberal identities in the blogosphere to confirm that in 2006 I asked for and received their advice on good liberal and conservative sources for an undergraduate politics essay"...</blockquote> Did your invitation get accepted, accepted, accepted?

Graham, I think the answer to your question is two-fold:

1) re: the students - Sit back and let them figure it out for themselves

2) re; the aged hacks who would attempt to draft students into their schemes - Stand up and fight them off. The hacks are your real target.

In summary, the kids are alright!

For those of us who never went to universtiy this kind of stuff just seems mildly amusing. I mean why do people take dummy spits by a few feral Young Libs seriously?

Meanwhile, in the scary real world, it's my guess that we are about the take a distinct turn to the Left - out of sheer necessity. I suspect social democratic ideas are about to come back into vogue, and our Young Liberal friends will be dragged along whether they like it or not.

Worry about the real world.
