With respect to the third option cited. Should that be that the Maori Party would support a Labour Party in government on money bills and votes of confidence (except for the infamous ‘exceptional circumstances’ a la Malcolm Fraser). I can’t see the logic in abstaining as the post states if a minority government as it would fall at the first hurdle.

Pablo: Nope; it means abstention. In this case, whichever party could garner the most votes would form a government. But it would be a government without a legislative majority, unable to do anything that the Maori Party didn’t agree to, and they could pull the plug and solidify their support at any time.

It’s certainly a “fuck you” option. But it would allow them to operate completely without constraint, and be seen by their supporters to be standing up for their interests, rather than being a footstool. And given the trend in NZ politics towards looser “coalitions” (which has included trading policy for a promise to abstain on confidence and supply) and the Maori Party’s oft-stated “plague on both your houses” approach, its not a possibility I’d like to rule out.

(And even if they take option one or two, and support either National or Labour, I expect them to make no promises on support for legislation, and retain their legislative veto, precisely because it maximises their power and demonstrates independence to their supporters)

Thanks for the analysis. I am really enjoying reading about NZ’s MMP system (as I think it could work well in Queensland) and watching an election in progress where Labour are on the nose makes me think about what would happen here if we had a different electoral system. Yes, there are different issues at play but it’s good to read about what is possible.
