Joe, will make that Viet curry tonight. Get the "Spice Market" book, about $49.95 but great value! Don't have the recipe with me here at work but stay tuned.

Jovial Monk that cheesecake looks so good. I must say, though, that I am even more curious about your Vietnamese Curry. How did that go and any chance of the recipe?
I will understand if you are too busy. (Maybe Saturday Salon would be the more appropriate place to post it. Over there with Pauls' interesting new soup creation.)

Saturday. reading and finished Keay's India- A History. A wonderful book. Have finally worked out prologue for my book - reading, taking notes from Alan Frost's James Mario Matra. Sat night watching TV. Exploded when neighbours from next door came knocking at the door just before The Bill started asking me to ring a cab. Only kids so quickly got myself under control and sent them away. They were sent round by their mother. I really like these people and have had some good times with them, but I've lost count of the times I've asked them not to come round after 6 at night and interrupt me when I'm watching TV.Realised I'd lost my key temporarily. Watched The Bill. Took some more notes from Matra and other stuff I've got on the Endeavour voyage - Cook's Journals, i-net extracts from Banks and Parkinson Journals. To bed.
Sunday:More reading and note-taking from Matra. Dipped into Abraham Eraly's The Mughal World. Was very surprised when courier arrived with The Twilight of British Rule in Revolutionary America: The New York Letter Book of General James Robertson, 1780-1783. Panic because I couldn't find the key. Had to go out back door to sign for book.Back inside a desperate clean up of tables, etc. Found key. Took more notes from Endeavour stuff, began writing the Prologue to my book, which will be no more than 1,500 words if possible. Watched Sunday night TV - Rome and the Germanic Tribes, Joyeux Noel. Then more work on writing the prologue. Have done first 2 paras and second last para. Did last para months ago (was 1st. para of earlier version. This time I think I've got it - connecting up 18c England, the First Fleet and the American Revolution all thru the character of James Matra. We'll see. Only got the middle bit of the prologue to write now.
Monday morning: 10 yr old girl from next door came round wanting to use the computer. She seemed a little upset. Seems the kid has been coming round here to use social network on computer when not wanted at home, and now I'm busy on itshe's got nowhere to go.Tried to explain the process of writing to her, ands she wanted to know why I wanted to write books.(That's the sort of question a disgusted father would ask when he found out you were'nt interested in football.) I told her she could watch me at the computer, but she waent home. A bit of a sad situation, really. But I remain firm in my reaolve I can't have them bothering me while I'm writing.

A southerly had been blowing for several days so maybe there was going to be some decent swell on Sunday. Unfortunately the swell was really marching up the coast past most beaches but I still hoped that some waves would be breaking and that the surf wouldn't be too crowded.
.
In fact the surf was quite small and more interestingly almost empty. The small coastal towns nearby are all looking quite empty when usually they are packed with holidaymakers at this time of year.
(* Note to David Rubie - the convoy carrying faux provincial white furniture and expensive do-hickeys never made it !)
The caravan parks are not jammed and the surest sign that out of towners are about , flash SUVs are conspicuous by their almost complete absence.
The largest centre near us was also deserted on the last Sunday before Christmas and the shopping malls empty. This recession is beginning to look more ominous.
.
Great thread is up at Club Troppo at present - one for the open minded at least .

Brilliant piccies jo. Poor ol' Santa is doing his best and has more reason to count off the days to Christmas than the kids. Last week in the supermarket a little girl thought I looked a lot like him. I was a bit surprised and missed the opportunity to say a "ho, ho, ho". Fortunately my dear wife filled in for me.

We spent Sunday at a market selling off junk from the garage. It went O.K. despite the sullen teenagers embarrassment at this old peoples constuct. (The little ratbag, gloat as I must, spun us out recently at award night by picking up dux for his year at high school.)

Anyhow, now flushed with cash from the junk bonus, I now have enough money to buy 2 new tyres for "la car" and have come a little bit closer to the day when I will be able to park the little sweetheart in the shed that is supposed to be her home. God willing.

I've got a bit on this week, so if I don't get around the bloggy traps before then, I'd like to wish everyone the best of the season. We're hoping for snow over here, and it looked pretty likely last week... but the probability seems to have fallen off this week.

Well, I put my precious progeny on a plane to Melbourne this arvo for her Xmas/Jan holidays with her father and to spend time with his folks and her cousins etc. It's everything to know she will be well looked after and have a fantastic time - I only worry a little bit about her being at gigs esp. at night - they are all- ages ones however, festivals mostly and the "bass player's girlfriend Veronica" or whoever looks after her....and if you see a father/daughter harmonica act busking in the city over the next few weeks....

She flies as a "UM" - unaccompanied minor. I was pretty stoked when Qantas wasn't flogged off in 07, as the UM service would have def. become user pays. Sorry that the rest of you cross-subsidise the extra expenses associated with children flying unaccompanied - but it means they can visit their non-residential parents, grandparents, cousins etc. without you having to take a flight with them. Which has to be a good thing that kids can visit their families more often etc.

You see quite a few kids up to 15 y.o with little UM tags sitting with attendants at school holiday time when they are taking connecting flights - mostly you stand them together at the Gate and they board them last and likewise disembark last and you have to sign and show ID to pick up, and they even ring a few days before each flight to check details. And the stewardesses and stewards are all great. Old fashioned quality service.

Since Thursday, I seem to have been at non-stop Xmas lunches, dinners and BBQ's and have even squeezed in a gig. (Hard life.) Some stunning home catering and accompanying wine/bubbly with a ton of happy kids from babes in nappies up to newly hulking teens having the run of the various houses. <em> Thank you mine hosts and hostesses. </em> And closely watching these big groups of kids gallivanting all around while the adults catch up, never fails to take me back to being a child and remembering how deadly exciting big night time summer gatherings were. The littler ones were especially glowing with their houses dressed in fairy lights, Xmas trees and promises of presents from the scary old dude and his reindeer sidekicks a-coming.

And some direct hits from the GFC ie. two dads just in my neighbourhood working in the financial sector have been given the chop. The wife was too embarrassed to tell more than a few people, the whole edifice built on hubby's huge paycheck. I felt sorry for them, he's no spring chicken, but when she was ruing the last os holiday to Alaska, cabin with private guide etc - you sorta lose a bit of sympathy.

And only two more sleeps till my holidays proper. And for sugar on top, I've already had my own family Xmas a couple of weeks ago.

No kids, no commitments and a pocketful full of K-Cash.... Yoo hoo.

The Chinese-born waitress at the restaurant yesterday arvo recommended a cold drink I'd never previously heard of -- a "lamb spider".

It turned out what she meant was a "<em>lime</em> spider".

Went shopping, spent too much (doing our bit to revitalise the economy). Had a lovely roast lamb diner. Now watching a DVD of Star Wars - The Clone Wars. Will let you know if it's any good.

Went and did some Christmas shopping today. Excrutiating to say the least especially when something you've had earmarked as a present is "sold out". But managed to get my very first mp3 player, a cheap nasty looking little thing from Dick Smiths for $25. I want to see what they're like before considering spending serious money on one so as long as the thing doesn't explode as soon as I put the battery in it I'll be content. :)

Worked Saturday morning (but had last Thursday off in sort-of lieu).

Discovered that one sure way to get your name and details taken by an irate member of the Queensland constabulary is to try to take photos in the Brisbane Mall with a digital SLR. Then I got yelled at by a seller of <em>The Big Issue</em> who thought I was taking a photo of her on the street when in reality I had removed the lens from the camera in preparation for putting it back in its bag. Thursday was not a good day.

Had a spin on a turntable on Friday morning with a 60-tonne locomotive, though. That was fun. Later, had an encounter with an ex-girlfriend who I haven't seen or heard from for 10 years. Some people, it seems, are never anything but friends...

Saturday arvo -- put the new plywood bottom and legs onto the old Thorn radiogramme, and rediscovered why it had been retired 20 years ago -- the tuner is buggered. But it looks niceish in an early-1970s way.

Sunday -- meant to do the housework. Didn't do any. As it looks like I've been rostered off until Boxing Day, there isn't really much of a hurry.

ENjoyed hearing the replacement for RN's Foreign Correspondent this morning ( an next 5 weeks), Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. (slightly more foreign...?)
It seems to be almost an orignal version - lacking only a couple of lines - unloike some of the horrendous redacted and bowdlerised editions the BBC has extruded.

Good on you, Jovial Monk, what a nice day you've had. I've now put in four hours working on my tax and am still not finished, and that's just to get it into shape for the accountant tomorrow morning. Considering the modesty of my income it hardly seems worth it.

Also, the Christmas tree is now up. Still bare, but up.
