Where is the Phase Two ‘?’ between Jacques @1 and David @2?

I think that was the point Jacques was trying to make – nobody has really worked out how to make much of a buck out of social networking without making it either intrusive or destroying the experience. Just about all of those sites were run at a loss until bought by somebody bigger, at which point the founders made out like bandits and the purchaser wrote down the investment two years later by umpteen billion dollars or so when they realised what a black hole for cash money they are.

If Facebook had any brains, they’d sell a share to each of the current users for a buck and make them stakeholders, and start limiting the activity of the non share owning accounts. The users would then be more likely to suck up the intrusiveness of being data mined in return for the increasing value of their share.

Then again, if I owned Facebook, I’d just sell the bugger to the highest bidder and spend the rest of my days riding my bike and writing articles for dead tree magazines on the future.
