It is cooooooold. I had to rug up today.

  2. 2 terangereeNo Gravatar

It’s not cold. That’s only an illusion caused by the lack of heat in the atmosphere.

This morning I had an epiphany.

I was walking in a piece of swampy bush redolent of a Louisiana bayou, but it was in suburban coastal NSW. I felt that I was part of all the wonders of heaven and earth, the watered plains, the moon’s shining globe, the sun and stars and the strength of spirit working within them which stirs this great mass, infusing through all its limbs and mixing with its body. I knew to the depths of my being that this globe, a vast similitude interlocks all, all spheres, grown, ungrown, small, large, suns, moons, planets, comets, asteroids, all distances, however wide, all distances of time – all inanimate forms, all souls, all living bodies, though they be ever so different, or in different worlds, all gaseous, watery, vegetable, mineral processes, the fishes, the wildest most untameable animals, all men and women, me also, all nations, colours, barbarisms, civilisations, languages, all identities that have existed or may exist on this globe or any globe, all lives and deaths – all of past, present and future, knew that this vast similitude spans them, and always has spanned, and shall forever span them, and compactly hold them, as it holds me safe now within its loving embrace.

    [apologies to you know who]

Spent the wwekend either on-line, or researching the next chapter of my book. Some thoughts on that proces: http://beingahistoryheadandotherthings.blogspot.com/2009/07/thoughts-on-writing-about-battle-of.html#comments

Amazing. Haven’t put a post on my blog in over a month, and now 2 in 2 days. Ah, well.

I had an encounter with a police radar that was slightly less expensive than expected last night.

Because I ‘fessed up to doing 55km/h in the 40km/h Alice Street, and gave my reason for speeding as “I’m an idiot,” the Scottish motorbike cop reduced my posted speed by 4km/h, apologising that he still had to give me a ticket, but that the ticket he was going to give me was for fewer points and dollars than the one he was supposed to give me.

Otherwise, Sunday was spent getting ready for a trip to Ireland tomorrow week, and beginning to plan my next trip to The Land Of The Talking Escalators in late August.

And wondering at The Courier-Mail’s somewhat lackadaisical manner of dealing with freelance journalists. I’m still waiting to get a reply from the relevant editor, even after sending six emails and leaving two telephone messages.

No great loss, they tend to take the market rate, reduce it by two thirds, claim full and perpetual electronic rights, and then tell you if you don’t like what they’re offering, then “go to the other daily newspaper in Brisbane.”

Discovered that Chocolate Pudding grows on trees!

Tried my first ever Black Sapote fruit. It’s known as the Chocolate Pudding fruit for good reason. Look them up and grab one if you ever spot them. When they’re good and mushy, they’re eerily like those evil chocolate pudding cups that stoners in America enjoy (…or so I’ve heard).

Now I’m off in search of the elusive Jaffa Tree and Fantale Bush.

Hedge Trimming all weekend. My clothes now exude the combined scent of crushed green leaves dominated by 2-stroke fumes….. nothing like it (deep breath in through the nose)

I packed a suitcase – it weighs a fairly shameful 17kg but in extenuation, I’m sharing it with my husband. We’re off on our honeymoon tomorrow. Southern England, London, Amsterdam, Lyons, Paris, and Venice. True, there are conference papers involved, but i’m expecting to have a good time nonetheless.

  9. 9 Robert MerkelNo Gravatar

    Congratulations Laura, enjoy your honeymoon.

’twas cold in Melbourne. On the morning bunch ride out to Humevale it was cold, muddy, cold and muddy, cold, cold and wet, cold wet and muddy, wet, muddy, cold and wet, cold wet and muddy, wet and muddy, and wet.

    Yes, in that order.

The green shoots are starting to grow on the burned-out trees, but it still looks like a bomb hit out that way.

Got up early, drove off at 7.00am to drive to Gawler for an obedience trial. I had allowed 10 minutes for me to get lost in Gawler and sure enough my complete lack of a sense of direction saw me take the wrong turnoff. Got to the venue, registered, didn’t see any vetting station so didn’t bother (in a trial with maybe 100 dogs you really do not want a bitch on heat taking part :) With Demi i just show the desexing tatto in her left ear.

Last two trials I took Demi for big long walks and got rewarded by her running out the ring. This morning I took her only for a coule of slow perambulations of the Novice ring and concentrated on stroking her to settl eher down and build up the bond.

Worked too, until my Mum & sister rocked up in the middle of me doing the heeling free 9off lead) part of the trial and Demi raced to them, bombing the trial again! Arrgh!

Went on to the Barossa Valley after we did the stays (Which Demi bombed, not that it mattered but WTF?) and spent some time browsing antique shops and a book shop. got 2 cookbooks and a book called “how to train a super dog” I live in hope!

On to Saltram and a bloody nice lunch, then home.

I was up in the roof/ceiling cavity cleaning out all the accumulated dust and ratshit etc etc with my ear to the radio. The Saints did it in such an exciting game.

Lazy Sunday, eh? Well, the child who has run a fever for two days now just has a cold, and the other one’s running a fever. Had a mad clean-up and cookfest for Saturday evening visitors, including a guest of honour with fructose malabsorption syndrome. Dessert was looking tricky until the other guests said they were bringing gelato. More visitors for lunch today, with only pregnancy-related dietary needs. Gardening. Moving the chooks to a different house. The Geek is doing work at home on a Sunday, which he avoids (bug-fixing before software release). He mowed the lawn this afternoon too. I need a weekend to recover from the work I do on etc.

  13. 13 AndosNo Gravatar

Very disappointed that my team lost to the 16th placed Melbourne on what was a very cold, but mercifully dry, Saturday arvo.

Very poor effort. Back to kicking school.

  14. 14 BrianNo Gravatar

We had a lazy Sunday at home for once. My wife was busy painting a room in preparation for the return of the prodigal, with me providing an opinion when asked, plus a bit of muscle when required.

I was doing a review of our investments, which could be depressing but not quite as depressing as 6 months ago, so maybe I won’t have to work forever, or at least until I shuffle off this mortal coil.

Looking forward to Federer/Roddick later on tonight.

  15. 15 TimTNo Gravatar

Laura, be ready for a heatwave! According to UK newspapers, temperatures could reach *gasp* the high 20s! Maybe even 30! And have a great time!

  16. 16 AmbigulousNo Gravatar

Wow laura, that’s not a lazy Sunday: bon voyage!

Speaking of departures, I’m off to Turkey for a month in the not too distant future. And while I know July/August will be hot, has anyone advice to offer that’s not included in Lonely Planet or something that should be emphasised?

A bit of a movie marathon. Ice Age 3 with two little boys; the 3D is spectacular and the animals are cute, but the whole thing is all about Family Valuez which made it a bit treacly.

Then tonight, with a friend, Last Ride.

    [Gulp]

    Fantastic movie

Very gut-wrenching stuff. And the photography and setting is superb.

Well I just got shitfaced with a bunch of like-minded folks while watching a choice selection of oddball Aus movies. Pure Shit, Kokoda Crescent and Noise. All of which are much better than I turned out to remember. Especially Pure Shit. Regardless of the subject matter, it’s still a very deft and funny piece of work.

I went to the gym, and then I saw a helicopter in front of Kings X station (London), because of a “person under a train”. I was a bit freaked out actually, because that helicopter had to take off in a very small space, and any slight error meant about 6000 spectators would be toast.

Now I have to do Japanese homework.

Also in the interests of being resident data governance fascist, I would like to point out that comment 5 contains sufficient information to identify the nice chap involved, and for him to subjected to disciplinary proceedings by his superiors [not that anyone's looking, obviously]. That’s an interesting bit of bloggy ethics right there…

Nabakov, the director of ‘Pure Shit’ made the cast watch ‘His Girl Friday’ to prepare because he wanted the film to play like a screwball comedy. It’s very funny.

I started reading ‘The Philospher and the Wolf’ – the subject matter is pretty self-evident from the title. Said philosophy academic discovered his wolf needed to go everywhere with him. So his course syllabus included the following paragraph:
“Caution: Please do not pay any attention to the wolf. He will not hurt you. However, if you do have any food in your bags, please make sure that those bags are securely fastened shut.”

FDB, losing a job is a good thing, even if it doesn’t feel like it at the moment.

Heh. Someone needs to put the D back in LP.
And in case the message wasn’t clear: The Weekend Starts Here, FDB.

    Thanks fellas.

    Terwilleger – “whisky”

Way ahead of you on that score.

    “…Curtis Mayfield”

But for that and all that followed from the ‘Tube, muchas gracias. Maybe one day I’ll tell the story of my boning. It wasn’t pleasant.

But here’s the upside – this week I was going to be rushing from work to catch the end of the mixing sessions for our new album, and this way I’m gonna be there throughout.

I expect this folk/country/rock/sea shanty album will wind up with louder drums and MUCH more synthesiser than one would expect.

  33. 33 Why Don't We Just Admit It's All Over?No Gravatar

louder drums and MUCH more synthesiser

Cue Chris Cornell to do nasty things to Mark Mothersbaugh’s innocent ditty.

On my morning ride I had a Territory pull out in front of me on Oliver’s Hill. Was buggered if I was going to brake on the fastest bit of the day, so I overtook him in the right lane and opined on his origin, current status and driving skills. Pulled back in after overtaking him then drifted into the bike lane towards the bottom of the hill. Was glaring at the optically-challenged nitwit (not what I called him, by the way) as he noodled on past after having picked up speed, when I ran over a piece of copper pipe liberated from some plumber’s ute. Pinch flat, big hiss and flat tyre. Stop and have to change the tube. Disposed of the copper pipe, so it didn’t do the same to someone else.

Bad karma from abusing a bad driver in a 4WD? The universe must be bent.

  35. 35 Roger JonesNo Gravatar

FDB – room for a few more genres perhaps?

  38. 38 j_p_zNo Gravatar

Quelle catastrophe, Fancy D. Hope things turn on the upside at the speed o’ light.

I’d regale you with numerous stories of how if, personally, I don’t get fired every 30 months or so then it’s a confirmed lack of progress (and steady pay raises!), but I bet you’re not in the mood at present. Meantime chin up, amigo, and I hope the scotch has a mildly renewable source. But the real truth is you’re a man of depth and skill, so the world will fetch you something better before’s ya know it.
Or you could always come across the Pacific, to where the flava is.

Meanwhile keep in mind the great Odysseus, man of exploits. And also mighty Popeye, man of spinach.

Commiserations, FDB. Merry honeymoon, Laura. Try not to do too much manky old work and lots of non-manky newlywed stuff.

I went to Renmark with a friend to visit an ex-boss. Although only had a day to look around, we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Highlight of the trip was establishing friendly relations with several brushtail possums which are resident in the parkland across the road from the pub here we had dinner. Managed to take plenty of photos with my phone and was very agreeably surprised by the quality of said photos.

One possum in particular was encouraged to pose like an A-list celebrity for the price of some carrot and apple. Ditto two pelicans this morning, but sans bribe. Now all I have to do is find the cords for my phone so I can put the photos on my computer.

This morning, found my glasses which I’d dropped yesterday afternoon while taking shots of a rather attractive toadstool. Also managed to find the right frames for 3 pastel and mixed media works I completed last week.

Drove the 400-odd Kms back home after a very nice mini-break. Tomorrow, I have to do the dreaded BAS and end-of-financial-year stuff. Book keeping sucks!!!

  40. 40 Robert MerkelNo Gravatar

BTW, also like to add that I’m sorry to hear about the boning.

  41. 41 FDBNo Gravatar

I’m getting less sorry by the minute to be done with the joint.

    I feel like a Turducken.

  42. 42 Pavlov's CatNo Gravatar

Yeah, me too, FDB. But as you point out, it means there’s more time for the important things in life.

  43. 43 Pavlov's CatNo Gravatar

It’s amazing to see what unintentional narrative effects one can achieve when the comments cross, no? It looks like a game of Consequences.

I don’t even know what a Turducken is. But it sounds nasty.

  44. 44 joNo Gravatar

FDB, is this a perfect time to resurrect the ye olde “Rock Against Work” gig? As a 90’s recessionista – these were always my favourite gigs, held on a Tuesday afternoon for years at the Hoey. Saw some great acts – fav memory – schooner in hand watching Dave Graney and whichever band, and through the door opening seeing people sitting in their cars at the lights in the afternoon peak hour traffic. Ah, yoof.

Good luck with your next positioning.

  45. 45 Pavlov's CatNo Gravatar

    Oh dear, that is disgusting.

  46. 46 AmbigulousNo Gravatar

but turducken appreas to be ‘de-boned’ ???

FDB: I did savour your reference to “be done with the joint”, surmising it was of joints of meat and boning. No butcher I.

Good luck with sharpening your knives, honing your skills, finding a hook, ummmmm, life isn’t too offal really….

[quiet day down at the Butcher's Hook]

FDB, far be it from me to make any requests of your new spare time, but if you were ever to start yourself a music blog, it’d go straight to the top of my reading list.
    Just sayin’.

Break out the zimmer frame, it was the early-mid 80’s of course…

Can also blame going thru audition process with daughter yesterday for Performing Arts High School; avoided the big cull and thru to next stage which just involves getting a letter saying yea or nay in Term 3.

Still not sure, if the ‘fame high school’ option is the right one. File under parenting stress overload.

  49. 49 j_p_zNo Gravatar

FWIW, I used to know a guy (actually I knew a LOT of folks) who went to the (erstwhile) original “Fame” performing-arts high school in NYC. Once I asked him what the place was like. His droll deadpan was immaculate: “Oh, you know, we spent most of our time dancing in the hallways, going ‘Fame!’ and striking dramatic poses.” Unfortunately his deadpan was his greatest talent, and you can learn a good deadpan anywhere.
