Frist!
My lazy Sunday has just begun. Now sitting at Heathrow, waiting for the check-in for my flight to open.
In London, AU$110 will get you an “hotel” room in Paddington where the carpet is frayed, the toilet doesn’t work, the window is broken and you can hear every Underground train rumble past below.
Great Britain ought to have the words “no longer” placed in front of its name.
Watched Insiders – Noel Pearson made me feel sick. Spent he morning briefly on line, then taking notes about the battle of Concord. Afternoon, watched a couple of episodes of Fall of Eagles on DVD.
I finished my thesis … words I sometimes wondered if I would ever write.
Congratulations, Ken!
Another obedience trial, another failure
But some progress and a few ways forward suggest themselves. Having walked the bl**dy dog heaps last week my arthritic hip is aching so the afternoon was lazy as.
will put a nice lamb roast and some homegrown spuds in the oven soon.
Congrats, Ken. That must feel pretty good!
Congratulations Ken.
Bad luck JM, though a roast lamb sounds like an excellent way to end the weekend. Are you going to wash down your lamb with a cleansing ale?
I spent this morning and the early afternoon battling the rather strong north-westerly out to Whittlesea. Nearly got blown off the side of some of the hills near Arthurs Creek with the bloody crosswind.
Marmalades: citrus and an onion, washed down with some dry white, and my sourdough rye and linseed. Superb!
Congratulations Ken.
Hard to know in the long drawn out process of submitting a PhD just what is the right moment to celebrate. (Suggest – all of them!)
Went to the American Impressionists & Realist Exhibition at Queensland Art Gallery yesterday. Brilliant.
Sunday is usually quilting day, but spent today tidying up the sewing room
Professional doctorate alas Polyquats but thanks to you and everyone else.
Congratulations Ken. Never having tried either, I do however stick my unqualified neck out to opine that to write the Great Australian Novel would be but a minor accomplishment alongside the mind numbing labourious tedium of effort required to transform the blank page into a thesis.
Jovial Monk & Robert Merkel. A good cab sauv would be better to wash down lamb. Or of course, the all-purpose chaser to ANY meal, a big bold shiraz!
Grats Ken! Saw Blood Wedding performed by some students and wondered when the accountants will close the drama department at the uni. All this acting and stuff can’t be cost effective – surely it can be contracted out!
Congratulations, Ken.

R your obedience trial — as someone who trains dogs — which obedience did your dog fail?
Have you tried breaking up the task into smaller units? Is your dog nomrally excitiable or passive? What are you using for rewards?
Just interested.
Robert, I had a Jim Barry 1996 Shiraz with the lamb–grass fed lamb, tender 7 delicious. The wine is unbelievably good.
Fran, the part of the trial Demi failed was the free heeling, i.e. dog off lead. Doing well working our way up the ring (to be followed by fast pace back down the ring them the figure of eight. Demi saw a clump of grass clippings and ran off to investigate it.
I think one problem is she is underexercised–my fault, which I have been trying to remedy at such cost to arthritic hip
Have you tried control using the look command?
You hold the treat (or if she/he is toy oriented, the toy) in your hand and say “look!” and when she responds you reward. You can also use a clicker as this is tidier. Practice with both hands so you can keep open doing agility.
What sort of dog is Demi? What’s personality?
Demi is a terrier, cross between (probably) a Jack Russel and a Silky Terrier. I have been going to obedience classes for 3 years. Yes the old “watch” I do.
Personality? Active & energetic very self willed and independent as with all real terriers.
SO (s)he should have failry strong prey drive — like the tug of war with a smallish rope, food rewards etc.
It just sounds like more work is needed reinforcing that
Yup strong prey drive, a damn good ratter! (and lizarder unfortunately.)
Not interested in tug games, will chase tennis balls enthusiastically, is tenacious in looking for it in the mostly weeds making up my back garden ATM.
Yes, one of the things besides the exercise is plenty of treats when she is in the right position walking, right by my left leg.
