Apart from aforementioned schadenfreude, is there anything worth celebrating about the LNP’s SNAFU, FUBAR and BOHICA moments in their preselection for the seat of Macpherson in Queensland?
I shall pre-empt the next Open Condemnation thread and condemn myself for being so chuffed.
But seriously, I’d like to know if any good can come of this in terms of governance north of the Tweed or in Canberra?
And if anyone can contribute other military acronyms to describe the LNP’s predicament, please go right ahead…

Couldn’t have happened to a bigger wanker except for the member for skirt. Hahahahhaahhahahah

SNAFU: Situation Normal, All Frightfully Unpleasant
but what are the other two?
I offer “fragging”: the taking of extreme measures against an officer by his own men, at close range; he unarmed and gruntled, they (allegedly) disgruntled.
This by way of contrast to “friendly fire” where the deceased may receive some warning of his departure and the source of his woes.
FUBAR is “fucked up beyond all recognition”, Ambigulous. Google tells me BOHICA stands for “Bend over, here it comes again”, but I’d not heard it before today.
I think the LNP could accurately be described as a cluster.
Ahhhh yes, thank you David, I’d forgotten the old ‘cluster…’ term.
Does the “stern test” of Turnbull’s leadership mentioned by the Oz have any etymological or proctological relationship with a BOHICO moment?
Positives look like Dutton will stay out if rumours are anything to go by regarding local numbers in case the party try to push him in elsewhere, which, is at least, a possible victory for local politics over party favourite politics (or an issue of local warlords which I guess isn’t so positive…) Continued embarrasment for the Coalition, is always a good thing in terms of governance imho.
What is even funnier is that QLD is one place where the Liberals are actually making ground and Labor are losing ground in the polls federally. For Turnbull to turn on the LNP would certainly result in the end of any chance of leading a credible alternative to the next election. I am sure Tony Abbott is hoping Turnbull turns on his friends to the north.
I’ve run out of chocolate biscuits.
That’s terrible, Paul. You’ve still got popcorn, haven’t you?
As poor Mr Dutton commented when the results were announced, his gender counted against him. After all, is any group more disadvantaged in our society than young white conservative males? Anyone?
Democracy is an amazing thing.
Can you imagine if the Labor party actually allowed it members to preselect their candidates, why all those “star” unionists would have no where to go.
The LNP clearly has the balance right on preselection processes, if not on their policies. Peter Dutton should have focused on getting the policies right and not the seat right, too late now for the next election.
Nathan Oct 5th, 2009 at 1:17 pm – wow another Nathan. So edgy. Maxine was preselected for Bennelong? She did okay didn’t she? hahaha. Priceless stuff from the born to rule liberals.

Run out of popcorn too. will have to stick with coffee, cigarettes and the last of the wine for tonight’s news.
Meanwhile there’s the NSW ALP on 4 Corners tonight. Just to keep a bit of balance.
Maybe Dutton should suck it up and contest his marginal seat… though it might be difficult getting support after his attempted flee, crawling back doesn’t engender confidence.
I thought Bernard Keane’s comment in Crikey today about the Labor candidate for Dickson underlines my point that Dutton is a fairweather sailor and that his defeat is a victory for the idea that the next Liberal government must be a re-hash of the last one.
I can’t remember the names (deservedly forgotten creeps the pair) but in the 80s a redistribution made a Victorian liberal seat slightly harder towin so the ling sitting MP stood for preselection in a brother Libs seat and won. Said bcolleague then went and stood for his usurpers seat and WON. Both long gone but a fine litmus test for the quality of Libs & pollies in general.
Just how talented is Dutton? The Australian has been running hard on the idea that Turnbull has been talking him up as leadership material, that he just _must_ be retained by the FPLP.
Is Dutton’s worth being overemphasised as something to hang over the baron’s head?
The LNP being so democratic the Oz yesterday reported that Dutton was done in by an organised factional push that saw most of the freshly recruited ex-Nat electoral council peeps vote as a unified bloc under the direction of a retired state Nat parliamentarian. The print edition hinted that the Nat factional chief was upset that her husband wasn’t in contention for the seat in question.

The commentary at Ed Brayton (first link) is very amusing.
