The Iraq fiasco continues to amuse.

According to testimony from no less a personage than Sir Christopher Meyer, at the time British Ambassador to the US, President George W. Bush stated that Tony Blair was “the only human being he could talk to”.

President Bush is quoted as opining that he thought that “the rest were from outer space”.

Now, this is incredibly sad, not least for Mr Howard. Couldn’t Mr Bush also talk to him? On the other hand, Mr Bush did state that Mr Howard was “a man of steel”, and therefore perhaps, in the strictest sense, not a human being at all.

But then again, that may not be news. For millions of good folks in Australia have long suspected that Mr Howard isn’t a human being, even in a broader sense.

One question left unanswered is what planet Mr Bush thought that he and Mr Blair were on.

    Katz @ 2,
Mars? God of war, and all that.

Am currently reading Hallie Rubenhold’s ‘Lady Worsley’s Whim. An Eighteenth Century Tale of Sex, Scandal and Divorce.’ If youse enjoyed The Duchess you’ll just love this.

You know who I miss? Graham Bell. Anybody here in contact with him? If so, send along my fond regards.

I had one of those little “Proustian donut” moments this afternoon… somebody brought me a sandwich that was slathered with both mayonnaise AND mustard, which I find unusual (although they do do it sometimes here in the States; just as in NYC, they march in March)… and suddenly it ‘brought back to me’ (shades of Genya Ravan!) all the kooky debates I used to have with my cousin when we were 10-year-olds, over the theory that humanity can be divided between mustard people and mayonnaise people (there was also a theory about music preferences braided in, but I’ll leave that out for now as it may be confusing.) Catsup/ketchup and soy sauce seem not to be quite as controversial, so we didn’t make any categories for them.

My definitions of terms are actually more exact than all this, but I don’t want to prejudice the voting by elaborating them in advance (or by saying which type I am myself).

So I put it to you, LPers… are you a mayonnaise person, or a mustard person? Feel free to elaborate on your reasoning, which may be very different from mine.

Mustard. Mayonaise goes off in the fridge if you don;t use it all at once. (I think.)
And its a bit stupid to stick it in the freezer. It’d probably turn solid.

The only mayonnaise I eat is the mayonnaise I make myself.

I’m quite partial to that intense, sinus-clearing, eardrum-burning hit of English mustard on a slice of cold, rare eye fillet.

Put me in the mustard column.

  7. 7 furious balancingNo Gravatar

    Both.

Hot english mustard is essential for a good old-fashioned corned beef meal, with cabbage, carrots, onions and mash.

98% of commercial mayo is disgusting and inedible due to being way too sweet, but homemade is wonderful, and that Japanese mayonaise in the weird baby-shaped bottle is fine for when you want to get trashy and have hot chips and mayo.

None of the condiments I had in the states really resembled what they were meant to resemble – even the mustard didn’t taste like mustard – it was just yellow gloop. I had ‘biscuits and gravy’ when I was in the South…I knew the biscuits were going to be similar to scones, but what is that stuff they call gravy?…was it white sauce?

Very true fb but you forgot the parsnip!

Parsnip? That’s a bit posh aint it? :D

So my Saturday, thus far, has been spent looking at some squally weather outside and listening to The Pretenders box set “Pirate Radio”.

…and now I think it is time for some Tom Waits.

    adios.

Mustard. We love mustard. Dijon mixed with butter for broccoli, wholegrain and dijon for the potato salad, wholegrain on toasted sndwiches and german hotdogs, hot english for corned beef and some in the mash, and we eat lots of horseradish creme which also has mustard in it. There is a jar of french in the frij also which I’m buggered if I can remember when or what it was used for last.

The only mayo I use is some bought whole-egg for the potato salad.

This is a nice subject! Home made burgers tonight with caramelized onions.

When it comes to beef on rye, it can only be horseradish sauce, the rest is frippery on the periphery.

Living in the tropics – we go long way for a home made mango chutney.

Me mate rings up. He is looking after a good mate of his just out of hospital. He rolled his cruiser on the way back to Kowanyama. He is ok, but apparently when the Doc looked at his blood test he asked whether he has got diabetes. Nope never had any probs with that, neither in the family. As it happens he stopped at the Termite, a fruit & veg shop between Kuranda and Mareeba stocking up on Mango chutney and honey, comfort provisions to cope with isolation during the wet. So as the accident happen all the bottles and jars smashed and he got covered from top to toe with the stuff. It was dry on his skin when he eventually got picked up and it only came off when he got a clean up at the Cairns Base. Now my mate recons it was all that mango chutney and honey that elevated the sugar level.

Anyhow we also had a long chat about Tony Roberts ‘The Brutal Truth’ in the last The Monthly. A well written lengthy essay. Some would find it confronting or shocking, however my mate is about to start a book on similar historical account on the frontier war in Queensland. So we were particularly interested in how Tony went about handling the issue and the interesting bits he came up with. Who can forget Uncle Phillips interview of Tony on Late Night Live With Dolly as guest. Revealing stuff.

Personally I am surprised no one has yet framed this sorry story as Hughes has done with ‘Fatal Shore’. As indeed our country was founded on red blood from black and white people.

I was under the impression that somewhere about the beginning of November there had been Newspoll survey that had shown a dire shift in the fortunes of the Rudd government – with it losing about 7 or 8% points to the Coalition.
I’m sure the ABC and SBS also highlighted these figures with little or no words of caution or other critical comment.
Now we have released a survey from September, that shows the Coalition could lose a further 20 metro seat.
Was I asleep, back in September, or were these results not aired at the time?
    Can someone please clarify.

There’s nothing wrong with crass self-promotion, FDB. Make sure you alert us the next time you’re playing in Adelaide, though.
