A weekly look at stories various PR people tried to bury in the tail end of the news cycle before this last weekend. What are they hoping that we won’t talk about this week because “it’s old news” now? Let’s give those stories some oxygen, link to blogs discussing them, and reanimate their shambling zombie corpses.
Also, what stories are the headpieces stuffed with straw spinning for us first thing this week, and what particular advantage do they hope to gain thereby? i.e. is it just about “winning the news cycle” for this week only or is a longer play building strategic momentum?
N.B. please stay on topic – this thread is for holding up a mirror to the tactics of the spinning Hollow Men. Breaking news stories and/or policy debates based on them should generally be discussed in the latest Saturday Salon open thread if there is no post dedicated to the topic.

As highlighted by Merc in the Monday Morning Musings post, the main spin agenda for this week continues to be pumping an Anti-Rudd/Labor Is Doomed narrative from as many directions as possible.
* nothing up my sleeve: pushing for Gillard to replace Rudd
* burying the lede: NBN Telstra negotiations success hardly mentioned
* bait and switch: blaming Rudd instead of Obeid/Tripoli etc for the Penrith by-election result
Anyone noticed any other techniques in play?

Nine’s Today show on Friday had an item on the CEO Sleepout held over Thursday night. Just happened to use their Perth reporter, who just coincidentally spoke with Twiggy Forrest about how rough it had been the previous night but what a good public service he and the other CEOs did.
I know it’s Perth, but surely there are some CEO’s there who could have been interviewed who are not confronting the Federal Government?

The CEO Sleepout is an interesting spin exercise in itself. Reminds me of one of those boarding school novels with a midnight feast in the dorm.
The fundraising itself is valuable, but I hate the sycophancy of the media towards the CEOs just because they are CEOs. I’d rather see a sleepout to support the homeless done by high school and university students.

Ah, Tig Tog, #3.
Is it the naivity, or the fact that such a comment coud have come from an LP” old hand”, of all people?
But I like the underlying generosity in the comment, perhaps here’s proof that for all the systems integrative capacity and techniques, an individual can still avoid homogenisation and retain their humanity.
It’s true the incident related doesn’t do a lot for the homeless, but think of what it does for the images of CEO’s…

But tigtog, that would be the poor pretending to be poorer rather than the rich pretending to be poor. Cammels, needles, eyes, etc.

They knew the newspoll was coming out at the same time and that given the previous polls was going to take up some of the media space. So did they intentionally make the announcement on the NBN on Sunday to try to distract from what they may have thought could be bad poll results (which turned out good instead) or were they trying to ensure there wasn’t too much analysis of the NBN announcement. Looks like its a pretty big gift to Telstra shareholders.

I think this fits in spotlight the spin!
