Gleaming golden statuettes
We’ve not paid the cinematic awards season its cultural due of late, so have at it while the red carpet is still laid out. Who/what did you love or hate? Who amongst the nominees best deserves a buff golden man? How Colin Firth Are You? Will our Jackie get her just desserts? Are the Razzies more fun anyway?

Will our Jackie get her just desserts?
Jackie Chan has a better chance, and he’s not even nominated.
The Colin Firth test is very sweet. He’s a shoo in. I reckon our Geoffrey can grab best supporting actor, but our Jackie won’t bring the little golden man home. Although anyone who was married to Derryn Hinch deserves an award for something. “You’ve done some bad things, sweetie”.
U wouldn’t have watched Sex and the City 2 anyway, but I sort of enjoyed what I saw of the TV series.
I was steeling myself to check out the Twilight series, either by reading the books or seeing the movies, but now I think not. Some of my really yooful friends are addicted. And I sort of have sympathy, indeed, admiration, for any book or series of books that gets people who don’t read to read. Like Harry potter.
As for the Oscars. Haven’t seen The King’s Speech but a friend of mine was telling me how good it was the other day. So I’ll tip that, and Geoffrey Rush.
Have yet to see Animal Kingdom. Think its just come out on DVD so will get it. Since I’m already into crime movies, Jacki Weaver’s performance is an added reason.
Don’t think I could handle the Nicole Kidman movie. Its the kind of thing I prefer to avoid because of the subject matter.
Who’s up for the “Lifetime Achievement Award” and where should we send a wreath?
Katz @ 4.
No idea. But here are some suggestions.
Kirk Douglas’s kid.
Charlie Sheen. (he’s gotta get an award for something.)
Jane Fonda. )who I still think is wonderful.)
I better stop. This could get out of control.
Kirk Douglas’s kid.
Never mind him. What about Kirk Douglas (aka Issur Danielovitch) himself?
The Life time Achievement Award is actually going to Francis Ford Coppola.
Sam @ 6,
I thought Kirk Douglas was dead.
Nope. 94 years old.
Jane Fonda has a really good blog, Paul.
Speaking of brickbats. Really pissed off that Debra Granik didn’t get a nom for Best Director for ‘Winter’s Bone’, even though the film is nommed for Best Film. But, hey a woman won it last year, so Oscar doesn’t have to worry about the gals for another hundred years or so.
Best pool of Foreign Language films to choose from in memory I reckon, so whichever picks up the Oscar will be a worthy winner.
It’s astonishing enough that the Greek entry, “Dogtooth”, made it to the last 5 at all, if it won, there’d be some fainting to follow.
The Susanne Bier film, “In a Better World”, continues her thematic concerns again, and is none the worse for it. A terrific film.
The Canadians haven’t been near the podium in a while, and “Incendies” is an excellent shot.
Mexico’s “Biutiful” features Javier Bardem in sizzling acting form, which may well count for a lot.
And then there’s Algeria’s “Outside the Law” which I must admit I’ve not seen, but as Rachid Bouchareb made it, and it’s a political thriller, there’s a level of quality pretty well guaranteed.
And what do the 5 noms have in common? That’s right, none are released here as yet (with the exception of In A Better World if you live in Perth). Sadly, this is a sign of the times, but I’m sure they’ll all turn up in various forms soon enough.
Good luck to them all!
Yep, via collins we’re tragically short of venues that’ll show some of the more difficult foreign language films. I reckon ‘Biutiful’ will get a guernsey because of its star power. Hopscotch is releasing ‘Incendies”. ‘Dogtooth’ has been around for along time. Maybe ACMI will give it a burl.
Fine @ 9 &10,
Will check out the Jane Fonda blog. She made a movie last year (I think) with Lindsay Lohan that I’m keeping an eye out for on DVD.
Re women directors getting Oscar. They might be using the legal controversy over The Hurt Locker as an excuse. After all, any excuse will do. Haven’t read its been resolved anywhere.
I’ve yet to see The Hurt Locker. Have to be in the mood for an Iraq/Afganistan war movie, but have to admit the few I’ve sen have all been very impressive, but they’ve all been about the first Iraq War. (Jarhead quite blew my mind. I wasn’t expecting to like it.)
Yay! Shaun Tan won an Oscar. There’s one for us.
I’d like to see some genre-based best film awards.
Also awards for outstanding acting beyond the limited distinctions of male/female, leading/supporting.
That’s great about Shaun Tan. He is wonderful.
Paul B @3
Your yooful friends are right about Twilight. I picked up the DVD some weeks ago to watch on a Friday night – mainly because that’s where my son is now. I foolishly thought that if the movie sucked (lol) that at least I could check out the scenery.
Big mistake. That stuff is seriously addictive and even knowing that the romantic hero/unattainability factor has been ramped up to the max by making a relationship with him fatal to the heroine does not help in any way whatsoever.
Not to mention the eye candy in the movies. So indulge at your own risk
Anita, some festivals have awards for best ensemble of actors, which often makes more sense.
No major surprises there. But a big shout out to the blokes who produced ‘The King’s Speech’. They’re lovely people.
I found it hard to believe the hype about Jackie Weaver in the running for ‘best supporting actor’ for ‘Animal Kingdom. Roles for older women in general release movies are hard to come by, but it’s a big stretch to claim her part as the crime mother was worth an award. I found the movie particularly turgid with a terrible sound track. Guy Pearse was the only competent actor in a movie that owed a lot to ‘Underbelly’ and its clones. I found it hard to have any empathy for the male crims.
Here is an inspiring article from the NY Times.

So Natalie Portman may run like a girl (Star Wars, its amazing that she survived with her bouncy running style..more proof that better weaponry does not deliver better marksmanship) but she thinks and performs like a genius.
