    Frist?

    Good heavens, I was.

So, for today: packed up ready for freezing an absolutely fabulous brew of Garbure – the very thick vegetable soup (with bacon, sausage, beans – whatever’s available) of the Bearnaise region of SW France. It smelled divine when cooking yesterday afternoon. As for the taste – and the fillingness of it – I couldn’t finish my quite small bowlful, and donated the rest to Him In The Study.

It was so nice to be using parsley and thyme from my recently planted mini herb garden, and to see how the herbs seem almost to have doubled in quantity since yesterday’s depredations thanks to some lovely gentle rain.

Oh, and phoned me mum, and had a call from my daughter. Happy Mothers’ Day to all mothers everywhere.

Happy Mother’s day to all the mothers on LP.
Quiet day. Taking notes on the 1775-1776 American invasion of Canada. The light here in Armidale is quite bad for my eyes today, too much glare, even with the curtains shout, light refelecting off the clouds. But, knowing I’m now going to be repaired some time in June instead of August, I don’t really feel bad about it.
Wil watch Blood Brothers tonight as I’ve already seen Moby Dick. (about 3 weeks ago I bought the DVD.)
Am keeping to my resolution never to watch Channel 10 while the Bolt show is running on it, and I sent them an e-mail telling them so.

  4. Fiona

That’s good news about your op, Paul. Don’t forget to let us know how it goes.

  5. Paul Burns

Will do. Apparently I have to take lots of eye-drops for weeks and always wear dark glasses outside forever after it. A neighbour of mine has jad the op. and she filled me in. Don’t expect any problems, the guy who is doing it is one of the best in the country, apparently.

    In Kansai, again.

The beloved and her children spent last week in Australia, and I flew back to Japan with them on Friday. Her 9yo boy can be a little bit of a problem, and has somehow managed to kill my $1500 laptop computer and a $400 video camera (I live in hope that they are covered by insurance).

Told the lad that he is going to have a stepfather this time next year — he didn’t take the news as bad as I’d feared, but not as well as I hoped (it seems that I have put the kybosh on his juvenile Oedipal ambition).

The beloved is not impressed with Australian water conservation methods, and (through force of habit) seemed to spend at least half of her holiday doing the laundry.

After returning home from golf , sat out the back yard, rateing the growth of the tomatoes I planted about 4 weeks ago. Results: Black Krim = slow. Super Sioux = stagnant. Rouge de Marmande = rocketing out of the earth like a fountain ( if fountains actually do that).Amazing growth.
And does anyone know why one of my capsicum plants would refuse to bear next too bananas?

Inspired by Fiona@2, I also headed to the kitchen to prepare some Garbure. Didn’t really know what it was before. Now it is smelling kind great and will do the family for dinner for the next coupla nights.

Happy day (and all days) to Mums everywhere.
My daughter called me from the States – she sounded a little homesick – looking for Confectionary Company Snakes-aww.Some things just cant be bought anywhere else.
    I miss her .
Garbure – hmm – will have a go – does it freeze ok?

I was at a goth club in Tokyo until 6am. Sadly the sound mixing was shit, so it wasn’t so fun. Now I’m exhausted, so I spent the afternoon in Shibuya in a cute cafe called “Dining … and People.” Japanese people really really know how to design stuff to build an atmosphere.

Tomorrow I’m back to work after 10 days off. Bleah.

  11. Fiona

Charlie, hope yours worked as well as mine did – truly yummy.

Fascinated – certainly hope it does – I have 8 meals for two in the freezer. Can’t honestly see any reason why it won’t work, however (fingers crossed).

Attended the Mother’s Day Classic fun run in Brisbane on Sunday. Ran my first “event”: 4.5KM, barefoot, didn’t die. Lots of fun.

Did watch Blood Brothers. Far too many commercials. It was pkay, but I wouldn’t call it one of televisions greatest moments. I think the commercials broke the flow of the story. Commercials are okay for horror movies – its the only way I ever got to watch Cujo from beginning to end. Ah, well, you can’t have everything.

Went on my first serious bike ride in 18 months. Caught the train on Saturday morning to Rosewood station, then rode via quiet back roads to Fernvale where I stopped over on Saturday night before riding to Ipswich and catching the train home from there on Sunday.

jumpnmycar – planting tomatoes in April? You must be a little way north. ;)

Rouge de Marmande is an awesome variety innit? I think next year I’m going back to that as a staple, with a handful of other kinds for fun.

Really not sure about Moby Dick on ABC last night, not sure at all if I’ll watch it again tonight.

When does mothers day start becoming the responsibility of the kids and not the husband?? And who said it was mother-in-laws day too??

  17. jules

    Hi.

Spent some of the weekend online for the first time in ages, so hi and I’d like to wish all the mums the best.

Since I last posted here I found out I’m gonna be a dad for the first time in Sept. After 10 years of trying (and seven of not really trying) and basically giving up on having kiddies without some external help. What a trip. Every time I think about it I get all stupid and end up with a goofy grin on my face.

It certainly brings things into focus.

Also glad to see those of you in japan seem ok.

If the Rouge de Marmande are as pest resistant as my Roma, then its goodbye Grosse Lisse forever.A bit of Dipel and Roberts ya mums brother. And yes, up in NQ ,I try to plant every 8 weeks. Only enough space for 8 – 10 at a time.

  19. Terangeree

Okay, it’s Monday, but I managed to re-enter Australia illegally this morning in Cairns, whilst possessing valid airline tickets and a valid Australian passport.

  20. Paul Burns

    Congratulations, Jules.
    Terangaree.
SSh! they’ll lock you in Villawoood or send you to Christmas Island. :)

  21. Terangeree

    PB:

I’ve heard that life at Villawood can be a riot at times. (^-^)

  22. David Irving (no relation)

And Christmas Island is a tropical paradise, Terangeree.

Still, entering Australia illegally while having tickets and a passport is quite e trick. How did you do it?

  23. Paul Burns

    Teragaree,
Of course, if you wabt a free trip to Malaysia …

  24. jules

    Cheers PB.

    DI(nr):

It was quite simple, really. I didn’t see the direction sign for Transit Passengers, and the officials in the customs hall didn’t notice that I had two boarding passes for myself alone.

And not having any checked-in luggage was a contributing factor, too.

Went to the local Primary school fete, and checked out the new Prep building, they already have a hall thanks to Kennet, who amalgamated out two HSs into one and moved the Primary to a High school campus, so they have heaps of room. Heard lots of praise re the new digs and am looking forward to the Hbomb starting there next year. Had the first of, what i assume will be, a common event, of walking across a crowded space and lots of children and some parents knew my daughter and i didn’t know them.

Finished off with some gardening, i think that it is the best procrastination, combining as to does the dramatic effects of house cleaning, with the simple joy of placing home grown produce on the kitchen counter, the social bonding of getting muddy with offspring and the capacity to deliver to ones beloved something that they hadn’t got around to asking for yet.

Congrats to Jules and Partner, get some sleep now and luxuriate in your goofy grin and days off while you have them.

    Terangaree.
So that’s airport security. Oh, that’s right they’re all too busy watching out for dangerous people who come on leaky boats.
