The Director of the RIHSS and the Conference Organising Committee at the University of Sydney have now published their statements and Negri’s refutation of Windschuttle at their website, noting that The Australian has refused to publish any ripostes on the Negri vs. Windschuttle saga.
Dr Philip Jones, the Director of RIHSS now attributes the cancellation of the conference at which Negri was to speak to “uncertainties concerning Antonio Negri’s ability to travel”. That’s no doubt true, and I’m glad to read his defence of academic and political freedom, but I still wonder – given Dr Jones’ initial refusal to comment on the reasons for the “postponement” or cancellation and the claims made in academic circles that Dr Jones personally wrote to The Australian denying that Negri had been invited by Sydney University a day after Windschuttle’s column appeared and instructed his staff to remove the conference website:

It would be interesting to hear Dr Jones’ response to this. I’m still inclined to think that the non-occurrence of the conference is related to Windschuttle’s column.
Just in: Keith Windschuttle’s article was re-published yesterday in FrontPage Magazine without any corrections or any acknowledgement that Negri denies his claims… You’d really think that a show like Media Watch would be interested in this sorry saga, but alas we only get trivia from its latest incarnation. Evidently neither the ABC “watchdog” nor The Australian are prepared to tackle the more controversial issues in media ethics.

I don’t have any brief for Negri’s ideas but I would much prefer that the visits was canned due to travel problems rather than intimidation, even by people who I might agree with on the matters of substance of Negri’s ideas.
