It’s my brother’s 18th birthday party tonight (Happy birthday Alex!) and my friend B and I are going. What should I buy him as a present?

An old Holden Sandman panel-van with an ace spray-paint job. (And surf racks, naturally). Or something beautifil like this – slightly more sedate.

yeah, what sort of car has he got?
A “lowering voucher” from the suspension shop was a good gift when I was 18. That would be sick. Pretty substantial though.
All purpose ‘picnic rug’. Very useful. Especially if he is a vanner.
Year’s mebership to the RACV.
A new deck would be cool, couple o’ hundred. One that plays MP3′s. If you live new a JB HiFi they should have new decks in that have a USB input slot.
Is he going to uni? Book voucher at the book shop?
Gym membership.
Bar tab at a cool pub.
Broadband internet connection.
err, some money.
what else do I want… I mean, your brother, might want…

it’s also my birthday today. I’m 10 years older than you brother.
I know exactly which film he should watch : ”Last days” by Gus van Sant.

A complete set of Wagner’s ‘Ring of the Nibelung’ but tell him not to open it for another 18 years ‘cos he won’t be ready til then.

The birthday’s over, but it’s never too late for surprise presents. Gift him with your time and the best dinner you can afford. Chances are your baby brother just wants to spend time with you.

I won’t say anything about the party because the chances are Mark will tell you about it! I imagine he may be a bit slow in starting this morning. I, on the other hand, have been up fishing plastic furniture out of the swimming pool.
Antoine, Alex is lucky enough to have his birthday on Friday 13. We needed Saturday to knock the place into shape and truck in the supplies.
Alex’s hero (one of them) is Lance Armstrong and Alex is one of those lycra-clad demons that streak past Quiggin’s place on the river circuit. One Wednesday last year when they start late at school he did 90k in the morning, finishing with a swing around the gruelling Mt Coot-tha circuit.
So his Mum gave him a pair of Shimano carbine fibre-braced road-racing shoes, discounted to $240 because he works in a bike shop. He bought himself the matching pedals, discounted to $140. There’s money in bikes.
I bought him a Powerhouse gym bench press, plus bar and weights.
By the shape of the parcel, Mark may have got him something for his mind.
By 3am he was saying to his Mum “How could you NOT love every-one?”

The port was a killer, Brian!

Mark, that was Seven Hill 1982 vintage port, from that priestly place in Clare Valley. It was given to Margot by her friend Sue. They had met this old brother on a trip there back in the early 70s who took the two young chicks out the back and gave them a taste of the real stuff. Sue had a second trip later and picked up the 1982 vintage, which was the last made by that particular wine-maker.
I had one glass and it was the only thing I drank all night. I thought it was something else!

It was very nice but a bit too much on top of the white wine!

Yep! perhaps! Still, a good time was had by all, I think.

Yes, Alex was pleased. Those kids really look out for and look after each other. I think it has to do with that particular school, which has always devoted serious thought, programs and resources to personal (and social)development. Unfortunately it is not, I think, a sign of progress in the whole cohort of the next generation.
