As regular readers of this blog (well at least the lovely Zoe) would know, I’m somewhat of a shoe fan. If not a shoe fetishist. Therefore I’m rather jealous that C.L. titled a recent entry The Fabulous Red Shoes Of The Fisherman. But fortunately C.L.’s post is about a totally unrelated topic, so I can save the good wine til last, and point shoe fanciers to this post from The Manolo on His Holiness’ very stylish Prada shoes.
My reason for doing so is absolutely unrelated to a desire to own Prada shoes, or at least to obtain vicarious pleasure by discussing same, but only to point out that a dash of red in an outfit enhances a generally subdued white aesthetic. Someone please tell George.
NB: If you want to buy me a Xmas present, I, like The Manolo and Papa Benedict, also love the red shoes. You know where to send the dosh.
Elsewhere: More on Papal footwear.

Oh my.
In shoe related news, I am the proud owner of the ugliest shoes in the world: a pair of Crocs (http://www.crocs.com/). They are, however, un-farking-believably comfortable, and I mean truly amazingly like not wearing shoes comfortable, even if I haven’t yet garnered the bravery to wear them anywhere other than around the house.
The comments thread at Manolos threatened to become quite amusing, but sadly slunk back from the brink. “I find your poor spelling unbecoming.” Heh.
The red shoes in the photo are very nice!
I don’t want to hijack the focus another post from women about women’s issues but I would say, just in passing, that the phenomenum of mens passion for mens shoes is not given nearly enough attention. The attention I’m looking for is some affirmation from the broader community, claiming your benchmades on medibank etc.
Anyway, back to your Manolos. Best female shoes I ever saw were a pair of stilletos worn by Debbie Harry in concert. Very simple and chic with a fantastic line – totally conservative but with a tiny silver padlock hanging from the back. Shoes are like wine, you can very quickly see where the money goes.
What happens when he clicks his heels together three times?
James, consider yourself affirmed. I’m quite passionate about European shoes and also Aquila.
Indeed the red shoes on the foto are very nice.
To James:
I share your opinion.
Mens shoes is not given nearly enough attention.
Interestingly i have spoke with a friend about shoes for nearly 4,5 houres last week.
Perth is a great place to live but try getting decent shoes. Parker Menswear stock some Churchs but that’s it pretty much.
Andrew McDonald in Sydney makes a ver nice shoe but I am never in Sydney any more.
Actually, I found a good shoe shop in Fremantle – Mr Bob’s?
Yeah, Bob’s Shoe Store. It is nice.
I am a convert to Rockport and Echo. Once i hit 35 my feet started to hurt. I decided top spend $200 instead of my normal $100 on shoes, and hey presto, problem solved.
Incidentally, I have exactly two pairs of leather shoes, one pair of sandals and one pair of gym shoes. That’s it for footwear.
My partner is astounded by the humbleness of my collection, but I have told her this is standard issue for blokes. One brown, one black, one for bludging (could be thongs rather than sandals) and one for sport.
Shopping for shoes is the worst form of retail torture yet devised. My wardrobe contains 4 pairs of shoes only and I maintain that is all that is needed.
1. Doctor Martens black shoe. v. comfortable and hard-wearing meaning the return trip to the shoestore is far in the future.
2. Blundstones. Coming up 12 years old. Still going strong.
3. Runners. Don’t know what brand – don’t care either.
4. Thongs.
Really the most comfortable shoes of all are bare feet and this is what I try to get around in wherever possible.
Bare feet in public freak me out, though I agree with latte hippies in the matter of Birkenstocks
Bobs is a good shoe store I was talking in the context of ultra up market footwear. I am what Arnie Schwartznegger referred to (speaking for himself) as a “Shoe Queen”
We need an Olga Berluti who “bleaches” her shoes on the roof of her factory under a full moon.
Red shoes on the Pope, is that fashion statement?
To each their own, personally I think it looks horrible, buts thats just me.
Another red shoe lover here – though currently I only own three pairs of red shoes.
And I am not admitting how many pairs of shoes I own total – I am not an Imelda, but it is a bit indecent, considering I work at home at the moment…
Weirdly serendipitous. I went to Bett’s (not a bad place, but you have to go to Highpoint) the other day to buy a new pair of shoes for work. As I complained to SO afterwards, I’m in serious danger of becoming Ms Sensible Shoes. My shoe wardrobe kind of resembles Matt D’s, except for a quite nice pair of calf length boots which of course I can’t wear in summer, and Boring Sensible black/brown medium heel shoes for work.
So, I saw this pair of bright red, pointy toe, kitten heel shoes and had to have them. They’re cheeky. They cheer me up just thinking about them, let alone wearing them. They are a clone of a pair of (black) shoes I had in 1984, that’s 22 years ago people.
I love them. Nothing happens when I click the heels together though.
Oh, and meant to say, they enliven a black-and-grey-and putty (my) work wardrobe as much as a white one. Everything’s lifted somehow.
I see more red shoes in my future.
the shoes are to catch the eye, the real story is in the goosesteps, SIGHIEL
Are they std issue? (For Popes.) But it’s white socks which put me off him.
Yeah, red shoes, but he’s the first to wear Prada
The socks have to be the same colour as the cassock!

new purchase – DKNY metallic RED sandals with red velvet staps – $20 Bondi Junction mall….matched perfectly with this two-tone mauve-light red/ two layer silk dress in the bargain box outside Shasta Bray (yummy mummy outfitters @ Charing cross) for $15.
I try (!) not to pay retail and wait for a sale or just look for bargains – speaking of sales – did anyone get to the Myer Sale earlier in year, when it hived off from Coles? The bargains were unbelievable – wish I’d known a few weeks earlier and had many more $$. Best buy was six (!!) really nice bras (oroton, bendon etc) including a red one, for like $60 bucks in total….I still look in my drawer in the morning and smile. (Translation for blokes RRP $40-65 each.) They also had Blahniks at much-o reduced prices – my days of high heels are so over – but they are incredible pieces of craftwork.
