Next week, it’s Melbourne visiting time!

I can feel a piss up coming on,
I can feel a piss up coming on,
I can feel a piss up, I can feel a piss up,
I can feel a piss up coming on …

I ain’t organising it, though. I couldn’t organise my way out of a wet paper bag!

  2. Laura

    Quite the globetrotter Mark.

  3. Jason Soon

Fyodor – if you’r reading will you turn up to the Marky Mark gig?

  4. Liam

As I said on the Catallaxy thread, I’ll be recognisable by my outlandish headgear. Alas, I actually look like my gravatar.

  5. Sacha

Liam, will you be wearing a pointy red Elizabethan neck roll?

Mark, I’m sorry, but I don’t think I’ll be able to make it as I have a prior engagement. Enjoy the night!

  6. Liam

No, Sacha, just the beret, you’ll have to imagine the enormous red star, and as I’ll be coming from work, I’ll probably be otherwise indistinguishable from the rest of the professional semi-bourgeois horde who’ve taken over the once respectably seedy Slurry Hills.
For out-of-towners or those unfamiliar with the area: get out from Central Station at the Devonshire Street tunnel, turn right and walk down Chalmers Street until you get to Foveaux Street, clamber up the hill, then when you get to Crown Street cross the road and turn left.

  7. Lefty E

Well, I’m happy to assist in organising une piss-up de Melbourne, Mark.

What brings you down our way?

  8. Mark

    Secret ABC business, Lefty E.

Will keep you informed as plans mature – I have to organise Sydney first!

  9. david tiley

    You’d better.

We need an excuse for a meet anyway. There’s a heap of triff people I haven’t met in the flesh yet. Well. the cardy anyway.

  10. weathergirl

Lefty E, mind your manners, bro. But if you’re organising it, I’ll be there. How about Flör?

  11. Lefty E

All a bit up in the air as yet, WG. See how we go. Will report back!

  12. mick

Mark, if you are ever in Innsbruck…

Speaking of piss ups, I’m off to Octoberfest later this week…

  13. Mindy

Alas, although I will be in the same city, I won’t be able to go to the piss up. Maybe next time.

  14. Mark

Oh sorry to hear that, Mindy, will definitely be a next time sooner or later. mick – if you’re ever in Brisvegas, you know the way to the Alibi Room!

  15. mick

Sure Mark, I know the way there – the problem is normally finding my way home afterwards.

  16. Mark

Not too much hassle for me, mick – I live two blocks away!

  17. Lefty E

On Melbourne drinks: I should add that Im notoriously lazy at actual organsation – much better at general exhortations to action!

So, dont feel like it all under control out there, Melbourne LPers. It aint! If anyone tees something up, I’ll be pretty happy to just roll up!

Mark – how about this. When you know your schedule, pick a night if/ when you’re free, & we’ll bat a few suggestions around on this thread.

Be fun to meet some people here ex-gravatar, as it were.

(Of course, I look exactly like Lord Byron. But Im not quite so sure about the rest of you.)

  18. TimT

Well, I look exactly like my gravatar …

  19. mick

    Me too.

  20. Lefty E

Well Tim, you’ll be pleased to know that your visage derives from the Latin quaestio, or ‘seeking’.

If my memory serves me correctly, the word was originally placed at the end of any sentence where a query was intended. In time it was shortened to Qo.

Later, innovative (or possibly plain lazy) scribes put the Q above the o, and over the years one became a squiggle, thus: ?

    Okay..

FX Holden is offering to arrange a meet at 6pm at The Laneway Place in top end
of Burke, on Friday October 6.. is that going to work for people?

Like Mark, who may not like the date, or have other plans, or be rushed off to be licked all over by Famous Radio Personalities..

  22. Lefty E

Well, I’m in for that date (I think – will check with my better two-thirds, aka the elder and younger Ms LE).

    Nice work FXH!

  23. wbb

Out of towners, can’t trust ‘em, David. What happened when we all dutifully lined up to meet Flutey?

  24. Nabakov

“What happened when we all dutifully lined up to meet Flutey?”

As I recall, you waited and waited and waited and then ran away to join the circus.

  25. TimT

At the moment, I’m generally working in the evening, Mon. – Fri., but can work around that date – though a Saturday would be better for me. I’ll keep an eye on LP over the next few days and if necessary try and shift my hours around for the settled date.

  26. Tony.T

Can I just add for the record that Lane’s Edge is a dubious venue – especially on a Friday or Saturday night. There are TWO! young people bars nearby, one in particular is right next to the LE beer garden (there is no inside garden) and it blares ear-melting techno-blitzkrieg which prevents any chummy banter. LE is also far too cramped for any more than a table-load of punters, having bugger all room to circulate. And last time, by Crikey, I had to talk to that Nabakov bloke all night. Bloody hell! What a troublemaker!

  27. wbb

Tony.T is spot on. I too had to talk to Nabakov all night but fortunately due to the “techno-blitzkrieg”, didn’e catch nary a word the poor chap had to say. Another beef is that the seating is as comfortable and as generously porportioned as the steel rail around the Ringwood East footy oval.

  28. Lefty E

In which case, may I ‘umbly suggest the alternative venue of Fad Gallery (14 Corrs Lane, Chinatown*)

Good bar, large space, not too crowded with crazed Ipod-toting freaks demanding techno at Concorde volumes to drown out ‘the voices’.

Fad has a zero-doof policy, and the Yum Cha joint across the laneway will (from drunken memory) serve you at the bar itself (although it is possible they just wanted me out of the restaurant….)

*For Quincelanders needing directions, Corrs lane is off Little Bourke St, between Exhibiton and Russell St.

Seconding WG’s suggestion, “Flor” mixes up first rate alcohol choices with excellent food ranging from tapas to hearty mains.

It’s not exactly in the beating heart of the city, but is easily accessed by tram etc. Crucially, to those hanging on Nabakov’s every word, it’s delightfully quiet.

I fancy Mark would enjoy it a lot.

Tried to join this discussion earlier but my comment went off with my server connection.

A-anyway, I think friday’s out for me. I was going to suggest depending on Mr B’s time imperatives that anyone free during the day or even Thursday lunch/arvo/eve might offer an alternate, maybe more coffee-based experience.

Or to put it another way Mark and anyone else, if you find yourself with more than one loose end let me know…

  31. Mark

I’d actually prefer not to organise this via the internet for a number of reasons, so could anyone who’s interested in catching up just please email me?

  32. Stephen Hill

    Hi Mark,

I’ll try and rock up on Thursday night. Just have to do some book shopping before hand (book vouchers are getting close to use-by date).

  33. Mark

Be good to see you again, Stephen, if you can make it.

  34. Armagnac Esq

    “for a number of reasons”

Don’t worry, Blair never shows up.
