From today’s Crikey:
Long term Labor governments seem to get into trouble very early in their terms. The gloss went off Paul Keatingâs victory for the âtrue believersâ? very shortly after election night, rubbed off by a combination of perceived triumphalism and the indirect tax rises that made a nonsense of the anti-GST campaign.
Peter Beattieâs Queensland government has also been having its woes. Former Attorney-General Linda Lavarch resigned shortly after the election, revealing a diagnosis of clinical depression. Lavarch had been embroiled in controversy over rogue surgeon Dr Jayant Patelâs extradition. Water has been a continuing source of irritation with the predictable time over-runs on infrastructure projects, and Beattieâs backflip on the recycled water plebiscite only begged the question of why it had ever been contemplated in the first place.
And then thereâs the Mulrinji and Police Union fiasco.
Beattie has also been haunted by ghosts of ministers past. Both Gordon Nuttall and Merri Rose have been charged with offences â Nuttall over an undisclosed $300,000 loan and Rose for allegedly blackmailing Beattie for a well paid job after she lost her seat. (Both former MPs deny the allegations and will defend them vigorously in court).
Beattie has apologised for selecting Nuttall in the first place, but the signs from polling prior to last Septemberâs election were that his characteristic apology strategy had worn pretty thin with voters. Beattie recognised this when he promised that the fourth term would concentrate on service delivery.
Rumours last week about a possible Anna Bligh challenge were just scuttlebutt. But the fact that such rumours start is a worrying sign for the Premier. With state Parliament resuming, he needs to lift his game and start accentuating some positives.
As always, Beattie has been well served by the pathetic rabble that is the Queensland Coalition. Bruce Fleggâs leadership is only safe because there are no alternatives. Jeff Seeney has reinforced his own offputting macho man image through extracting a ludicrous coalition deal that would make him Premier even if voters elect more Liberal MPs. And his tubthumping on the first day of Parliament wonât have done anything to dispel his hitman persona.
The Beattie government has many solid achievements to its credit. It would have been better for both Queenslanders, and itâs now becoming apparent, the government had a stronger opposition been elected last year. As the parliamentary year begins, Beattieâs challenge is to get back on the front foot. As always, his biggest battle will be with complacency and indiscipline within his own administration, rather than with the Coalition.

Sorry to be a pedant but wasn’t Keating’s ‘True Believers’ government a fifth term Labor one?
Hawke – 1983-4 -I term.
Hawke – 84-87 -II
Hawke – 87-90 – III
Hawke/ Keating – 1990-93-IV term
Keating – 93-96 – Vth term.
Eek! Indeed it was!
Here in Victoria it is hard to imagine what Labor would need to do to be thrown out of office. Broken promises (no tolls on Eastern Link), lies (“we will not consider desalination plants” before election, “they are inevitable” just weeks after the election http://www.theage.com.au/news/opinion/deeds-louder-than-words/2007/01/31/1169919400763.html ) and corruption (George Seitz http://www.theage.com.au/news/editorial/george-seitzs-hold-on-power/2006/05/12/1146940731643.html ) have hardly put a dent in Labor’s popularity. I think this says something depressing about the state of democracy in this country.
Up until this morning I’d have believed you had it spot on until Rob Messanger had a brain explosion that was supported by both Seeney and Flegg
The ill- discipline of the Nats and Libs could see them with even fewer members next time around if they keep in the Nosedive they are in. The latest Morgan poll last month had them losing even more ground to Labor and this performance by Messenger will not help.
With the future looking more and more like the Bracks/Beattie/Iemma boot on the human face forever maybe we should look upward for inspiration?
Like to Saint Kevins hero who believed in and practised assassination politics.
Praise our Rudd in heaven who said that today’s xtians should emulate his hero and role model, the German pastor Dietrich Bonhoeffer.
JESUS IS MY FUHRER!
Professor Rat – I think Leahy got it pretty much right with today’s cartoon. Don’t expect that the intelligence, dedication or principle of Dietrich Bonhoeffer will be challenged by any of the Queensland opposition.
While Bonhoeffer might have been hung two weeks before the war finished, this lot have inflicted self- harm and harm to each other before the battle begins!
The Beattie government has many solid achievements to its credit.
?????????????????????????
Geoff, Are these the ones you are after
