The last time I checked in to DOI, I witnessed Hairshirt Hamilton and Duncan Fine (Mr. Catharine Lumby) having a catfight over the (alleged) sexualization of children in advertising. Mr. Fine charmingly suggested that Dr. Hamilton was a dirty old man and that the problem was with his own paedo-perversions, rather than the agency guns at Mojo, Satchi, etc. Mr. Fine and his wife have recently published a very serious tour de force of scholarship titled “Why TV is Good For Kids.”

During the catfight, Mr. Fine employed such elevated rhetorical methods as comparing his opponents to the Taliban. That is, when they weren’t being accused of of being proto-kiddy-fiddlers. Mr. Fine also shrieked “moral panic” several times.

Kim, if this is the calibre of debate your Moral Panic Monday threads are designed to support/defend, I am afraid I will have to disagree with you on this one.

What terrible sins I have working for me. Must be the wages.

  3. A Satanic Minion

Satan’s minions want to eliminate national borders and do away with sovereignty.

And have everyone listen to heavy metal. Can’t believe they left that one out.

    Talk about ingratitude, John!

  5. The Devil Drink

Listen, minion, I won *that* little battle when waltzes got popular. 3/4 time and close-position dancing—nothing like ‘em for encouraging all the sins in the decalogue.

    Who? Me or Kim? ;)

    Satan’s minions

    not Pan’s People?

  8. steve

After seeing the Monks film at the German Film Festival on the weekend at Centro I think ‘The Monks’ Would qualify as Satan’s Minion’s and be proud of the tag.

  9. Tiddles the Cat

Utah County Republicans ended their convention on Saturday by debating Satan’s influence on illegal immigrants.

And yet he still hasn’t tumbled onto what’s going on with Satan’s feline fausts. Deluded fool.

  10. anthony

Hey great garagey link there steve.

Well Mr Geenfield, I don’t think you need worry. Mr (values) Howard has already captured this little meme, as well as the latest neocon theme, in his little reminder about ‘immigrants with HIV/AIDS’ and how he is against them being let into the country’ about three weeks ago. Funny though, I haven’t heard much about it since. Maybe he is waiting for a time closer to the elections to launch that little number. Africans and their insatiable sexual appetites for the next little chapter from the neocons playbook? Think that will do it this time round?

I think Howard junior, the one studying to be his own Karl Rove, got the idea from a republican spokesperson quoted in the local Press a while ago, that the next big thing would be ‘immigration and the threats immigrants pose to our way of life’ Lol!

Oh dear. You have to pummel the stuffing out of a straw Howard, when you had the real deals right before your eyes. Also, you would do well to know that Australia’s immigration attitude towards people with highly infectious diseases was laid down in Keating’s day. Secondly, you would do well to know that Kevin Rudd is the first candidate for Prime Minister in Australian history to place Christian theology right at the centre of his campaign.

Before you next think of wasting my time, do some bloody reseacrh and stop boring us with adolescent reflexive Howard-obsession. There is political agency outside Howard you know.

  13. St Margaret

Well if Howard is desperate enough to be urging everybody to pray for rain, then I guess finding more immigrants to demonise would be the next logical step. He’s probably praying for another lot of children to throw overboard right now. Honestly I’ve had enough of bloody christians in government – christians to the right of us, christians to the left. But I guess the reason why atheists are not popular because they hold humankind responsible for the world’s problems rather than more exciting things like the Devil.

  14. zorronsky

Hey Greenfield I suppose Howard wanted to reverse Australias attitude to immigrants with infectious diseases but was thwarted by

Are you asking me a question or just wondering out loud what “you suppose?” I’m sorry, I do not understand why you used my name.

What revisionist little demon you are. You know very well that by the late 19th century the powers of the waltz were on the wane. It wasn’t till we invented the back beat in the mid 20th century that we won the war. You should know. We were both on the steering committee.

Digby at Hulabulloo is superlative at covering these sorts of stories. Is there a local ‘Digby’ blogging anywhere?

Hell, I’ll settle for a local ‘ firedoglake’.

  18. Beelzebub

    Oh, c’mon guys.

We fluoridated the water supply. The dumb suckers never caught on.

    Now look at them. Bwahahahahahaha!

  19. Fiasco da Gama

Also, you would do well to know that Australia’s immigration attitude towards people with highly infectious diseases was laid down in Keating’s day.

It’s rather older than that, John. Read Alison Bashford’s Medicine at the Border, or if that’s a bit too ethnocultural-history for your taste, Keith Windschuttle’s White Australia Policy.

  20. steve

Or try the date 1901. As FdG was indicating.

  21. Enemy Combatant

“If things get really desparate for the government this year, will they be tempted to take a leaf out of Utah Republicans’ book?”

    Kim,
things are already “really desperate” for the govt. Heard Malcolm Fraser on the radio today. Mal reckons that the The Big Fright before the next election will come at the expense of the Muslim commununity, in much the same way that Roman Catholics were “it”in Oz in the first half of the 20th cent. eg. “They’re not real Aussies because they owe their primary allegience to The Pope”, or in this case some terrorist-loving Ayatollah or Iman.

Mal knows what The Rodent is capable of. He made him Federal Treasurer once. So maybe Australian Muslims will be The Rodent’s Satan du jour this campaign.

After Tampa and SIEV-X, The Rodent’s form suggests Mal could be right .

  22. John Greenfield

    Fiasco

While you are of course technically correct, wrt the particular infectious disease at issue here, Keating is our innovator. Oh, and I do not read Windschuttle; I get enough of him on LP! :)

The man mentioned in the Utah blog was crying it was a serious Republican Party meeting and one must assume he has some relevant importance in Utah.Crying and making the comments he made springs from a obvious and yet, strange to me,deep belief the UNO is evil.I could say objectively, that, has occured to me also as a word that has definition.Sad thing is,maybe he hasnt met anyone within the UNO charter he could appreciate. I followed a interest in Buckminster Fuller to a UNO site and Bucky was both a Christian and great humble man worthy of being called a inspiring American. Let the Utah Republicans discover Buckys influence. For the sake of clarity, and the sake of understanding.

  24. steve

Secondly, you would do well to know that Kevin Rudd is the first candidate for Prime Minister in Australian history to place Christian theology right at the centre of his campaign.

He’s in fine company as far as I can tell. But I doubt that claim is correct anyway.

  25. steve

    Oh Dear,
Rats on the sinking ship using the Australian media to indulge in a bit of TransIndian Dogwhistlin’, perhaps Jack! Hillsong was just a brilliant political ploy wasn’t it?

  26. derrida derider

Actually, I reckon if Rudd is sharp he’ll close off the option of an anti-muslim scare campaign by loudly predicting it in advance.

  27. John Greenfield

    derrida derider

Rudd might have a bit of a credibility issue there after his recent invitation to Hilayly to go back where he came from. If Labor does not ‘me-too’ any Howard dog-whistling on this it will be disastrous at the ballot box.

I don’t think so Mr Greenfield, not this time. Your bad.
